Kronborg Slot, Zealand, Denmark
4.5 (3.139 reviews) Monday: Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #1 in Zealand Castles
Evocative castle of Elsinore
Kronborg is a must-see! “Hamlet’s Castle” is a magnificent experience with soaring towers, a huge ballroom, damp casemates and just 40 minutes from Copenhagen. At the narrowest neck of the sound, between Denmark and Sweden, the medieval fortress merges with the magnificent Renaissance castle and there are few sites in the world where so much drama and history is gathered in one place. Mythical hero Holger the Dane’s mighty sword meets Shakespeare’s equally mighty pen, as the spirit of Hamlet glides through the castle. No wonder this extraordinary place is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Beautiful Castle in a stunning location
The first stop on our Grand Day Trip from Copenhagen on a beautiful summers day was Kronberg Castle, the inspiration for Hamlet and a huge part of Northern European history for two centuries. Externally when we went the building was under heavy scaffolding which was disappointing but once you get inside the outer wall its hard not to be impressed by the centuries old construction and the view across to Sweden. Our tour guide then took us inside explaining the history of the building, its link to Hamlet and how it was a key position in gaining access to the Baltic Sea. In a few of the rooms are actors which add a bit of humour to proceedings. We spent over an hour there due to being just a small part of our day long tour but you could probably take it casual and spend a few hours there. A great building with a lot of history and well worth making the hour journey north from Copenhagen.

Definitely worth the trip!
Kronborg castle makes for a great trip up from Copenhagen. If you have access to a car I would highly recommend you drive up the coastal road, stop and enjoy a coffee on the way. And then spend a little time in Helsingoer after the castle, it is a lovely little town with some old buildings and interesting churches - and some good food options. The castle itself is very well presented - from the dark dungeons up to the rooms and promenade (very reminiscent of "The Great"). The guides are very good and the outline of castle's history was interesting (there is a short version and a long version). If you are coming from the parking lot, and go to the left of the castle, the entrance isn't all that well marked - a passage through the outer walls through to the ticket office. Highly recommend the trip. If you want to make a full day of it, pop across the narrows to Sweden on the ferry for a few hours.
