At the entrance to the Castle this impressive portrayal is of a Pope during the major Schism and turbulence in the Catholic Church. Having risen to a high rank in the Church he was elected Pope (or Antipope) in 1394, prolonging the Schism. After being excommunicated he fled to Peniscola in 1417 and resided in the great Castle until his death some years later. He was initially interred in the Castle. See more..
