Not the usual sightseeing experience... We paid a visit just before their winter break in October 2018. We had easily booked a ride in a huge yellow hauly truck on the Internet and arrived about 30-40 minutes before the tour started. We decided to go down into the mine on the spot and didn't regret it. It was quite interesting even though the tour was in German. We were taken to the mine by bus and then a 10-minute train journey followed in the dark. We spent about an hour in the mine. Plan a 2 hour stop at the silver mine at Oberzeiring. Be at least 15 mins early for the tour to have enough time to change to warmer clothing since the mine is 8 deg. Cel. all year long. You will be provided with helmets to protect yourself in the narrow caves. The tour itself is about 1 1/4 hours. I don't think they provide an english tour but it's also worth to see it when doing the German tour. Expect to climb down and up again many many stairs - but at 8 deg. in an absolutely clean air environment that's part of the fun! Enjoy. a very tough ride close to the walls. not suitable for ppl suffering from claustrophoby, a hell of fun for all others. a very nice guide. call them half an hour before or the day before to book your tour. the club president is also the mayor of that hidden town. a very cosy touching trip. after that treat yourself 500m back at the Lugauer Wirt where a Couple from Cornwall does marvellous Apple Pie and other stuffSee more..

Der Schmelzofen Alfred-Hütte ist ein Industriedenkmal in Steinhaus am Semmering. Er steht unter Denkmalschutz.1838 gab Fürst Alfred von Schönburg den Auftrag für den Bau der Alfred-Hütte. Hier wurden Erze aus dem Fröschnitz-Dürrgraben und von Rettenberg verschmolzen. Vor dem Bau dieses Hochofens musste das schwere Erzgestein mühsam über den Semmering zum Schmelzofen in Aue (Gemeinde Schottwien) zur Verhüttung transportiert werden. 1844 übernahm Josef Ritter von Wachtler den Betrieb und modernisierte den Hochofen. Von da an zählte das Personal dieser Hütte bei vollem Betrieb 18 bis 20 Mann. Die produzierte Jahresmenge Roheisen belief sich auf 3000 t. In den späten 1870er-Jahren wurden zwei Kupolöfen angeschafft, mit denen Gusswaren produziert werden konnten. Trotz Vergrößerung und Modernisierung der Arbeitsabläufe musste der Betrieb 1885 auf Grund der übermächtigen Konkurrenz und dem Mangel an Holzkohle und Erzen mit ausreichender Qualität eingestellt werden.
