Enisala Medieval Fortress, Southeast Romania, Romania

Amazing views from atop
The site is on top of a hill from where you can see a lot of the land in this part of Dobrogea. Quite amazing views. Too bad there are no guides or at least some written information on the site, unless you buy a printed map of the place, you would not know anything about the time or people who built it. It’s a hidden gem though, definitely recommend if in the area.

A bit of medieval history
Built in the XIVth century probably by the Genovese merchants , had the purpose to overlook the trading routes by see and land for this area, later in the XVth century it was included by King Mircea "cel Batran" in the Wallachian fortification system ... till the Ottomans arrived in 1420 till 1877 (the year of the Independence war) - so for a bit more than 450 years it was under Ottoman reign. After the Ottomans were routed out from the region of Dobrogea the fortress lost its military purposes and started to degrade (with a helping hand from the locals who used the stone from the fortress for building purposes). Today is a tourist attraction and a landmark of the area, closed on Mondays for visiting otherwise opened from Tuesday through Sunday. Overall an interesting place - where you can take some great photos , so if you are in the area I recommend you pay a visit ... pity is not much guiding except for some printed panels and the museum near the location consists of printed posters and very very few items... otherwise it is a visit well worth it.

Old stones, beautiful views
The Enisala fortress rises above the Dobrogea plain like a sort of Romanian Parthenon. Its location and the views from the top make it worth your while, as it gives you the most beautiful sights over Razim Lake and the northern part of Dobrogea. It is worth going in summer or spring on a light-filled day, so that you can see as far as possible. The fortress itself, in spite of restoration work, is basically a pile of bricks of interest to historians. Do not expect any amenities or anything still in working condition. It's remained just a good vantage point.
