Country walk in the town
When I learnt that our cruise ship was to make a stop at this small Danish town I was not sure how we could fill the day. A little research told me that the old ramparts were worth a look and, in the event, that’s what we did. On docking it felt like the whole town had turned out to welcome us (it was the ship’s first visit) and there were numerous Tourist Information staff to help. Armed with a map we were able to make our way around with no trouble. On the walk, while studying the map, a local stopped and offered his assistance; everyone was so friendly! It was just like a country walk, affording us lovely views and we were virtually on our own! Look out for their interpretation of pedestrian traffic lights – as a salute to the "Landsoldat" statue.

Fredericia was originally a fortress
Fredericia was originally a fortress that should dominate the narrow waterway Lille Bælt and protect the Island of Fyn (Funen). Fredericia Vold - the ramparts - were build ind the period 1650-1660 and form a half circle around the town Fredericia - the rest being protected by water. The town Fredericia was bombarded first by the Swedes (166?), later by Germans (1848, 1864), so there are rather few very old houses. Very unusual for Denmark the streets meet in right angles. Now the ramparts are a beautiful park, but the original fortress design is distinct and well protected.

Pleasant Walk
Although not high on a cruisers priority list, the town of Fredericia is well worth a walk. From the ship we collected a town walkers map outside the port and had a very pleasant meander through the Old Town and up on the Wall seeing how this town defended itself in yesteryear. Well worth a couple of hours, also recommend going up the old Water Tower for a grand view of the surroundings.
