  2. 4.0 Fort Amsterdam (52 reviews)
    - Nice Example Of A Period Fort
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Fort Amsterdam image
While the outer walls are not original, the inner keep is. As a whole this compact fort will give an idea of what like was like for those living there, and there are great panoramic views from the top floor of the keep. On the ground floor of the keep look out for the (dark) prison cell with the cleverly constructed 'window'. Note that the fort is close to both Gereja Tua Immanuel and Masjid Tua Wapauwe - respectively the oldest church and mosque in Ambon. See more..

  4. 3.5 Oranye Fort (51 reviews)
    - Fort Orange
    Historic Sites
    Oranye Fort image
The Dutch were expert and extremely capable fort builders creating fully ramparted walls using trapezoids with angled bastions The Portuguese before them had few blueprints and constructed mostly semi-fortified trading posts which were vulnerable to Dutch attack. It was said that two fully-laden vessels of cloves, nutmeg, mace and cinnamon would be worth half a years Treasury income. No wonder the European nations fought each other over ownership of the Spice Islands (Molukas) so tenaciously for centuries. Not much remains today but what is there is worth visiting. Most of the battlements remain intact with several powerful canons pointing with no current purpose towards the harbour. Ignorant of the reason behind the stone walls, children play football inside the walls, chickens peck at the ground for food and dogs bark at strangers encroaching on their territory. The fort area is now officially a garden park with a few facilities offered. We did have the pleasure of talking with Omar who was born in neighbouring Tidore and took every opportunity to improve his English. See more..

  6. 3.0 Fort Nassau (19 reviews)
    - An Accessible Old Fort
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Fort Nassau image
Three sides of the fort are the originals, but the fourth is not and has been added recently (in concrete) to replace the last wall which had crumbled away long ago. To be fair, it's been done quite tastefully. While Nassau is not in the same condition as Fort Belgica, it has a nice ramshackle feel - and it seems that you are a part of history. That history is not a happy one, with the local Banda Islanders killing 40 of the Dutch while they were trying to build the fort, and then 22 years later the Dutch beheading 44 of the local leaders (an event that became know as the Banda Massacre). 10. 1.5 Victoria Fortress (5 reviews)
    - This is a military camp not an attraction!!!
Monday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites
    Victoria Fortress image
I don't know why this is on Trip Advisor with it being a military camp and the public cannot enter. All you can see is the entrance which in my opinion doesn't warrant being reviewed. Rather than this it would be useful for the Martha Christina Tiahahu monument to feature on things to do in Ambon. I would happily do a review if TA permitted, not only is the statue of Martha Christina Tiahahu impressive but it is set in nice grounds from where there are very good views of Ambon City. See more..

    Wapauwe Old Mosque image
Not many people know about this site. But this old mosque is just full of history. This is the first mosque in East Indonesia dated back to year 1414. People in this are is still using this mosque for religious activities. The pole, the pulpit, and even some of the roof beam of the mosque are still original. They all made of wood. In the mosque there are two old Al-Qur’an written by hand by Imam Muhammad Arikulapessy in 1550 and by Mushaf Nur Cahya in 1590. Every time big Mosque of Istiqlal in Jakarta has festival, these old Al-Qur’an are brought to Jakarta. Many thinks needed to be repaired, said the man who take care the mosque. Because if it rains very hard, the water leaked in to the mosque. I hope that Ambon authority also will pay more attention to this historic mosque. See more..
