A splinter and a lollypop

Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special exhibitions of international standing.

    Beautiful castle
Went with family. It is a beautifully renovated castle, with respect! The building in itself is beautiful to see ? They have an exhibition now of the row of kings, the history and with focus on the clothes...beautifully made dresses, masterpieces! They also have a nice historic and new silver exhibition and other historic pieces. For the kids they have areas and events, so they are not too bored and they have a shop and a restaurant too. It is set beautifully overlooking water in Kolding! Only reason for only 4 rating, is that my interest is not in kings and drapes and i thought there could have been more than silver in the collections, but i take my hat off for how well and professional everything is done! I can only recommend!

A bit disappointing but glad is was open and gave us something to see while here (off season for most of the other sites
We visited today while on a 4 day trip to Denmark and mostly because most of the other historic sites are unfortunately closed this time of year. The restoration project is very different than what we have seen done with the other castles and historic landmarks, so it was interesting. There is a large room with a large collection of (sorry, no spoilers here) and we were impressed with the volume of items in that room. We saw some examples of lace-weaving and had a lovely interaction with one employee who talked with us about the process, the use of real gold in the King's lace and the time it is taking him to weave the lace he is working on; truly a lost art! We ended our day there by walking up the 15 levels in the tower to the rooftop and took some great photos before visiting their gift shop and buying a few small tokens to take back with us to remember this historic site by. Overall, I would say we didn't see a lot of personal items belonging to the King or anyone else who has lived here. There were examples of clothing and an entire area dedicated to a ship, but not much of what we had hoped to see. (Maybe that is due to two areas that were not open for us to see today, I don't know.) I would give it a 3.5. Bonus: The location is in a cute area with streets lined with shops and restaurants. You can park in the parking area and walk around for hours. Make it a day trip if you have nowhere else to go and it makes for a nice day but the castle alone we were a bit disappointed with.
