    Gorgeous island with beautiful setting best experience overnight
    Highly recommend making time for excursion to this small quaint island just a short and gorgeous ferry ride away from Hiroshima and staying overnight to experience ancient Japan. Debated given our 8 day trip to Japan splitting time between Kyoto and Tokyo whether to invest the extra night given side trip to Hiroshima. So glad we did as this was the highlight of our entire trip. Booked a traditional tatami hotel complete with onsen, kaiseki, robes and slippers. After last tour boat leaves the island becomes a quiet experience. Me and early riser youngest son went out at dawn to explore island in robes and slippers seeing many deer and watching the sun light up ocean, island and Tori gate. It was magical.

    Visit even with the Gate under construction and obscured
    I highly recommend visiting on a day trip from a Hiroshima, even with the famous Tori gate under repair and the view obscured There is so much to see and do on this enchanted island. With yourJR pass you can catch local train and JR ferry for no extra charge, and there is a very frequent service. The island is so beautiful to walk around, yummy food stores offering oysters and the local cake. Temples to admire, you can easily spend an entire day here
