Although I was in possession of a JR Pass (not valid on this railway company) I decided to take the Ichibata Railway from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station since it offers direct trains to Izumo Taisha Mae Station close to Izumo Taisha Shrine itself. It proved to be a crazy little station right in the middle of the main shopping street. From the outside you hardly recognize this to be a train station. Very interesting building. It also is the final station of a really beautiful, one hour taking, train ride along the northern shore of Lake Shinji. So during the ride you can enjoy some very spectacular views over the lake.
