   A three hour car drive from Hanoi, this is a (relatively) relaxed area with major fishing and rice paddies. Not on the main tourist path, you will probably be the only tourist. To my surprise, across the rice paddies against the horizon were many cathedrals. My friend's family took me for many scooter rides and WOW! Luxurious structures, surrounded by graphic statues. Cathedrals really aren't 'my thing' but these are truly fabulous and if they interest you there is a good day's tour here. The local people were wonderfully friendly and stopped and chatted. The singing (combined with a chanting influence) from one was heavenly! Also the scooter ride around (many streets are not really wide enough for a car) is worthy in itself, to see the fishing activity and work in the rice paddies underway. Local morning markets are excellent. Also catch the ferry across the river to a Buddhist complex (although the guide was exceptionally unhappy, but nonetheless very helpful!). The local hotel was great, although I will never get used to Vietnamese mattresses. Not on the tourist path, but you would enjoy being away from it all. See more..

   This majestic Basilica was indeed awesome! Outside, with its tall twin towers and three big doors, it looked imposing, but inside, it was simply breathtaking with its gothic structure! The ceiling was extremely high and bright-coloured. The building was intricately decorated with stunning stained glasses. Many statues of Saints were placed throughout. The altar area was very sacred and well-arranged. It's indeed a real sight to behold. We never expected to see something so splendid. It was Tet Festival when we visited. We're so thankful the front door was open. Some locals were taking pictures in the compound. Children were running around, enjoying its beautiful, green, clean ground dotted with lovely bonsai trees.    We went on Tuesday morning and the doors were all locked, much to our great disappointment. Even so, the Church looked very austere and attractive from the outside. It was quite hard to arrive because the cement path leading to it was narrow, meant only for motorbikes and cycles. We had an experienced driver who drove very cautiously. Very interesting was the rather newer shrine of Our Lord Jesus with Divine Mercy rays' statue standing tall and majestic across a small bridge, directly facing the front of the Church. I'd advise anyone interested, to visit on a Sunday morning, to be able to enjoy its internal beauty as shown on website. See more..
