Bai Tu Long Bay is the name of an area located in the east of Halong Bay Vietnam. Although it shares many similar geological characters with Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay is considered as off the beaten tourist track with many deserted and pristine beaches, no less impressive karst mountains. The Bay has a rich biodiversity with two ecosystems: a tropical, moist, evergreen rainforest ecosystem; and a marine and coastal ecosystem. The area has scarcely seen any tourist development. A large number of guests, through online research, wish to visit the Bai Tu Long Bay because it is much less crowded than Halong Bay. The only disadvantage is that it does not have many grottos. The nearest place for a visit (Vung Vieng Fishing village) is at around 20 km from tourist port. See more..

We visited this Zen Monastery as part of a tour from our ship. It is one of the largest Zen monasteries in Quang Ninh Province, and is located near the beautiful beach of Dai on Bai Tu Long Bay. According to Asian culture, it occupies a favorable position with its back to the mountain and facing the sea. Many monks and nuns are in residence here. There are about 75 steps up to the monastery entrance. There are no handrails on the stairs. (The bathrooms are also located up these stairs, although there is a service road that appears to wind around and up to where the bathrooms are located, if you don't want to do the stairs. The bathrooms are clean, with running water, hand soap and towels, and there are many stalls.) There are more steps to get to the meditation room and larger Buddha shrine. We had a 15-minute meditation session with one of the nuns (see pictures). We were also given a book on the proper way to sit when meditating, and how to meditate. There is a small sculpture of Buddha in the meditation room (see picture). There is a second level above the meditation area, which is a larger shrine to Buddha (see picture). The views from the monastery are spectacular, and the various sculptures and objects placed so as to be in harmony with the monastery and surrounding landscape. There is a bell (unfortunately, some tourist was standing IN the bell when I took the picture), a large drum, and an amazing sculpture (see pictures). This is a very peaceful place, but hard to get pictures that do not have other tourists in them. Don't miss visiting the monastery if you are in Halong Bay. See more..

Besides the great food, it is a truly beautiful holy site with ancient t bonsai trees like I've never seen before. Many of the walls of the temple are painted with Intricate murals of the rules of Karma and the stories of the Buddha.
