It was a amazing trip from Mai Chau to Pu Luong. We have learned much about the local people life and tried some kind of traditional foods, drink homemade rice wine. Mai Chau is a fantastic rural location. It is a beautiful valley with many small villages of ethnic Thai people's surrounded by stunning mountains. We cycled and walked on reasonable paths to experience the views of mountains and rice fields and the lives of these hard working people. Our accomodation was reasonable, food was good (vegetarian selection), local guide was great, good selection of local hand crafted goods. We bought a shirt, 2 dresses and 3 coin purses. In the evening there was a live dance show by a local Thai minority group with lots of energy and talent. Highly recommend this tour. See more..

The countryside is just like in the movies!!! Beautiful and peaceful. We had a bike ride through the rice paddies and villages and hills. It was a really enriching experience, it took me to a world prior to the industrial revolution, a world where everything was done by hand. Mind you, Im not that naive to know that Mai Chau is at this point a hot tourist destination and the villagers are very aware of it. Nevertheless seeing the wooden houses with people still keeping their animals in the lower floor and they sleeping over. It was really an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. See more..

Travelling in a bus the 135 km from Hanoi to Mai Chau, in Hoa Binh Province, our driver pulled over to the right hand side of the road about 25 km short of our destination. It was Thung Khe Pass on Vietnam Highway 6, a twisting, winding road that often runs dangerously close to the 1,000 m drop to the valley below. Sensational! Perched precariously on the edge of the cliff 1,000 m above the valley below, are stalls selling snacks, drinks, local herbs and spices, and a range of local forest orchids. We sat on a bamboo mat in one of the stalls and ate a local speciality, sticky rice cooked in a bamboo stick and served with a salty herbed dip. Far below us was a patchwork of rice padi, streams, small villages and patches of bamboo forests. And across the valley floor, another mountain range rose to an equal height to where we were sitting. It was only a 20 minute break on our four hour journey to our eventual destination, but was most memorable. See more..

This village is located in Mai Chau and just a short bicycle ride from the Mai Chau Eco Lodge. Known for its crafts and for its weaving this little village boasts some of the most beautiful workmanship and scarfs and blankets anywhere around the area. All the houses in this region are built on stilts. You live in the upstairs and your workplace is down below. The craftsmanship that goes into these houses is simply amazing and they stand the test of time. They have been building houses this way for centuries. The Muong Cultural museum consists of several old stilt houses that range from the royal house to the poorest. There is an exhibit of antiquities of clothing to funeral traditions, the site is housed in old war fortifications which in itself interest. The artist who owns it works his pottery there... shame none of it seems on sale as there was some exquisite pottery and screen prints on display in gallery. Tickets are available at the restaurant just before (also parking there) very nice lunch there too... apparent an exquisite view over pool at top of hill which we found out at bottom of hill, already dripping in sweat, we decided not this trip. Tour guide in English for extra money... well worth visit about 2 hours is well enough time OH and they entertained our 11 year old on bamboo playground nicely while we wandered on tour.. good tour See more..
