   I first came to Dien Bien in 2009 and fell in love with the people, the history, the landscape, that first weekend. Sure it is no theme park ..... but much much more if you want it to be. The colourful ethnic minority people (mainly Thai and H'mong) largely retain their cultural and traditional lifestyles. The battle history, although tragic in some ways, none the less epitomises a simple peoples struggle for freedom and independence against their self imposed colonial masters. The landscape is incredible, in the valley itself and in any day trip you do beyond the towering mountains that rim the Muong Thanh valley. Plenty of hiking, bird watching, bike riding and general enjoyment to be had for a 1 hour flight from Hanoi that costs around $100 return ... and lots of accommodation options. For mine, a trip to Dien Bien Phu, and around Dien Bien province is an unexploited tourist destination. And if you want to help people in one of the poorest rural provinces in the Vietnam ..... there is plenty of opportunity to open your heart without opening your wallet. Plan ahead and a trip to Dien Bien will change your life. See more..

   This was the focal point of the Viet Minh victory over the French in 1954. It's a really well-maintained location with lots of old trenches and bunkers and even some barbed wire (not original, of course). You have to climb to the top of the hill to see an ex-US tank that the US provided to France...France then disassembled the tanks and flew them in and reassembled them. There's also the massive crater the Vietnamese created when they tunneled under the French position and detonated nearly 1000 kg. Continue out the exit and there is a coffee shop where the French Prime Minister enjoyed a coffee. See more..

   The mountain scenery on the way to Dien Bien Phu is very spectacular. The city itself is really quite pleasant. Plenty of trees, and not so much traffic. Nice weather. There is a very pleasant monument on a hill right in the center of the city. Great place to go read a book and enjoy the sunset. There is a museum, a hill with preserved fortifications and a cemetery and monument right downtown. These are pleasant but underwhelming. However, to me the trip here made me feel how remote this area must have been in 1954 -- extreme mountainous terrain, covered with jungle and with numerous rivers to cross. Truly folly on the part of the French to think they could defend their supply lines across such terrain against a determined enemy. See more..

   I was struck by both similarities and differences between the military cemeteries I am familiar with in the west. In common is the rigid uniformity and highly structured layout. Different is that there are many more flowers and more colours here. Worth visiting whilst in DBP to pay respects to the fallen and remember the price of war for all sides. See more..

    Some reviewers have indicted that this is a reconstruction of the original bunker. I'm not sure if that is the case, but it does have an intangible modern feel to the materials/construction. There aren't any period relics. There isn't much explanation of the site. Certainly none in English. Cost me 20K to enter. When I turned up at 1250 it was closed, but fortunately it opened up at about 1315 - another reviewer has indicated they close the site over lunch. See more..
