Very proud to say my great grandfather built these two house in Sparta. Everytime we go through we know Great Grandpa Hickey blasted the rock himself and carried the rock down the mountainside on an old mule he built both these structures and my grandfather Charley O Hickey was born in one of the houses in 1903. A lot of my heritage and family members of the Hickey family are buried in Black Oak cemetery nearby just outside of town See more..

My husband and I stumbled upon Sunset Rock Overlook en route to Ruby Falls and stopped to take in the view. The overlook has a beautiful view of the green hills! We returned the next day to take in the view a bit more and to drone in the area. While there, we met someone from the Chamber of Commerce who gave us some great recommendations for stops in the area and recommended Welch's Point as a better option for sunset so we didn't take in sunset here, but the daytime view was pretty too! Did not know about these falls when I did my trip planning but then saw in the scenic byways guide we would go right past it on our way to Sunset Rock. My wife is a real wildcat- by alma mater and in bed- so we had to stop. It had been storming for a couple days so the falls were really flowing. There is a highway sign and plenty of parking on the uphill side of hwy 70. If you miss it, turn around when safe and go back. I wouldn't attempt to do what some others have suggested and walk from Sunset Rock although it's not that far because it is too dangerous with all the traffic. See more..
