Family heritage

Very proud to say my great grandfather built these two house in Sparta. Everytime we go through we know Great Grandpa Hickey blasted the rock himself and carried the rock down the mountainside on an old mule he built both these structures and my grandfather Charley O Hickey was born in one of the houses in 1903. A lot of my heritage and family members of the Hickey family are buried in Black Oak cemetery nearby just outside of town

A Surprisingly Interesting Spot to Stop!
We had driven by the Sparta Rock House many times but never stopped. This time, we noticed the "OPEN" sign on the highway so we gave it a shot. We're really glad we did! The state employee who serves as the docent there was very well informed and an awesome storyteller. If you are even one bit curious about the original Highway 70 and the Rock House itself, do yourself a favor and stop when you have the chance. Donations are accepted, and they even have a modest inventory of merchandise for sale.
