Things to do & places to visit in Maastricht, Limburg Province, The Netherlands
Touching Belgium on its west and just a few miles from Germany to the east, Maastricht is the capital of Holland’s southernmost region, Limburg. A town rich in history and culture, Maastricht boasts two wonderful town squares: Vrijthof, with Sint-Servaas Church, Sint-Jan's Cathedral and many bars, cafes and restaurants; and Markt, home to the town hall and, on Wednesday and Friday mornings, a fantastic vendor market. The city’s Vestigingswerken, or old town fortifications, are another big draw.

- 5.0 Boerderij Daalhoeve (6 reviews)
-For everyone who loves animals
Monday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Farms
This was the most surprising day: Exploring Maastricht on our bikes, we ended at this lovely farm in the West of the city. Absolutely adorable! The animals are super happy and all the staff was friendly and helpful. The little café offers homemade food and at the shop you can buy eggs, honey and much more! Especially for family, this is the perfect spot! See more..
- 4.5 Maastricht Underground (3.131 reviews)
-A must do in Maastricht.
Caverns & Caves
An amazing experience. We the did Guided Tour Fort Sint Pieter (English) and Guided Tour North Caves (English). Both tours were an hour each. Tom was our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable & witty. The tours are just outside the city centre. I would recommend walking as the bus takes just as long or longer if your bus driver gets confused and drops you off in Belgium! See more..
- 4.5 Boekhandel Dominicanen (2.791 reviews)
-Charming bookstore in gothic century church
Monday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas
Absolutely charming! The store is a sight to see and offers three stories of books and wonderment. There’s a modest English section on the second floor as well as a few old/antique books on the top floor. The books are priced quite high comparative to other shops but it’s worth it for the visit and a nice espresso in the accompanying cafe. See more..

After a 3 year delay we got to see 'Andre' in The Vrijithof. It's a unique experience with lots of new material and some old favourites. Despite cancellations new tickets were issued with delay. The total atmosphere is unmissable and all embracing. We travelled by train via Eurostar/Brussels/Liege and Maastricht. See more..
- 4.5 Onze Lieve Vrouw Sterre der Zee Basiliek (961 reviews)
-Beautiful church with unique feel - a must see!
Churches & Cathedrals
This majestic church had a much different vibe than many of the other amazing churches I’ve visited. Absolutely stunning interior with many painted wood sculptures. The dim lighting gave it a more calm, yet serious feel to it. I would highly recommend visiting and lighting a candle or sitting in the pews and taking in the full experience. I loved the visit! -An Amazing Experience By The Best Tour Guide I’ve Experienced
Historic Sites
I dislike guided tours in general but I was blown away by this one. What a pleasure it was to listen and observe our tour guide Ernest. He was passionate and electric, knowing and curious. Everything you look for in a tour guide! He was able to paint us a visual picture in a really approachable way. Not a single second of the tour was boring. I truly wish all tour guides were like Ernest! If I could, I would like him to join us in our tour around Netherlands just because of how vibrant he was and how it transformed everything we had the luxury of hearing. See more..

- 4.5 Wijngaard Apostelhoeve (45 reviews)
-Heaven for wine lovers
Wineries & Vineyards
Apostelhoeve was one of the first to revive Dutch wine growing. They are good at it and they use top technology to produce a range of white wines from different grape races. The bottles are more expensive than their French, German and Austrian and Italian counterparts, but they are well worth the price difference. It doesn't end there. The view from the farm is wonderful. Announce your visit and you can opt for a wine tasting party that will put a very big grin on your face. The owners and staff are very pleasant indeed, always ready to explain or exchange opinions. Bring lots of enthusiasm for wine and someone sober to drive you back. See more..

A lovely square in centre of Maastricht. The town hall is imposing and we loved the melodic bells chiming on the hour. It has lots of little bars and cafes and is lovely to sit in and watch the world go by. Seats can be in the sun or the shade and drink prices reasonable. €5 for a glass of wine. - 4.0 Sint Janskerk (247 reviews)
-Great Climbing Tower; Church in need of Refurbishment
Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers • Religious Sites
The inside of the church is like many other churches and has many historic graves on the floor. As you look around you do see that the church is seeking funding to refurbish the ceiling and parts that showing the age of the church. For a few Euros, you can climb to the top of the red tower and get a great view of the valley and city. Th climb is about 200 steps so plan on the long climb. There is a history room about 1/3 the way up the stairs and a great place to rest. IT is tight squeeze to get by the people coming up and going down...do not bring a backpack on the stairs. The church is a very nice place and lots of history of the Reformation. See more..
