Historic Sites

Although going to Kondoa is almost day's journey along the current road from Babati (a 4 wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended), it is well worth the trip. The Kolo sites BI, II, and III are especially amazing with vivid red colours of paintings and the Pahi site is interesting with its more recent black and white art. It is advisable to arrange for a guide before going to the area though through the historical sites office in the Kolo area as the guide will add much understanding of the paintings, their significance and age. When arriving at the sites by vehicle it is still a good walk up the mountain from site to site but the view of the area as you walk gives you a real appreciation of the variety of terrain and fauna within Tanzania.
