Kyaik Htee Saung Pagoda is located at Zoke Thoke Village of Bilin Small Town of Mon State. Pagoda and Village is on the way from Bilin to Taung Sun & The pagoda was said to have been built by ogre brothers Mani Kondala and Dewa Kondala. At first the umbrella was slanted and so it was called Hti-Saung Pagoda. Later the Sayadaw of the pagoda made a vow and put right the umbrella and since then it was called Kyaikhtihsaung Pagoda. The pagoda was built all in laterite. with nothing of lime ,sand and cement. It was some 2600 years old. It has a height of 63 cubits. Santawshin Pagoda image
Taxi driver kindly showed us the antique monastery before we went up. The wood carved doors, at least a hundred years old, are really exquisite, Hindu style dancers and flying cherubs, what a mix. Take the curved stairway down from the complex top, turn left before the street, walk across the courtyard and up the steps, and push open the metal doors. There's a caretaker inside who minds a Buddha shrine. See more..

    Nwa La Bo Pagoda image
I've read that this place rivals the Golden Rock, which I didn't visit. It's quite a trek to get there, and a little underwhelming. Certainly a good bet for adventurers (like me) but the long, hot, bumpy ride up into the mountains (or walk, as I did) is probably not worth it. See more..

  17. 4.0 St Matthew's Church (24 reviews)
    - a must when in Mawlamyine
    Churches & Cathedrals
    St Matthew's Church image
St Matthew church is an abandoned church in Mawlamyine - also known as "little England" and the capital of british Burma from 1826 to 1852. Build in the late 18 hundreds, and abandoned, it pays testament to the former colonial time in Burma/Myanmar. A must-see when in Mawlamyine. Recommend walking around and peeking trough the boards over the windows to see the interior. If you want to explore, there is an abadoned cemetary near by (close to the still functioning catholic church) - just walk trough the overgrown grounds (beware of snakes, there is no path, you'll need to make your own) and you'll soon find old tombstones dating from early 18 hundreds to 1911 (the "newest" I found). Some are completely overgrown and cannot be found, but you can see the tombstone of little Julia and little Jennie, who only lived for four years. See more..

See more..

    - Largest in the world!
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Win Sein Taw Ya - Reclining Buddha image
Just really odd! The Buddhas themselves are very impressive. Apparently the largest in the world. But the real fun in inside, it’s like walking around a building site barefoot. Many depictions of a Buddhist hell can be pretty terrifying! You can get a local bus from town very cheep to the main road. See more..
