We took a trishaw ride from the River Irrawaddy to the MyaTha L'un pagoda. A 100 step walk up a covered walkway took us to this lovely pagoda glittering with gold in the sunlight. Great views over the river. Do take something to clean your feet when you leave as they will be filthy. See more..
  5. 4.5 Salay House (13 reviews)
    - This place is Amazing!
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
    Salay House image
Salay house is gorgeous! It is a hotel gift shop and restaurant. Each one is so nice a and well done. It’s the best thing in salay. If want an authentic town see Myanmar go to Salay. I visited it on a stop on a scenic Irrawaddy cruise. It was my favourite town that we stopped at. It felt like going back in time. But the story of this hotel/restaurant/gift shop is AMAZING! So a husband and wife run this hotel. He is a doctor and beyond that did all the landscaping and electrical in the hotel, which is impeccable. If that wasn’t enough he built a wing of the hotel. But what makes the place really unbelievable is they use some of the profits to give the entire town free medical. They really do that. It blew my mind! If go there stay there. We also bought two gorgeous rings there one garnet and a amethyst ring. Also the food and rooms are so nice! See more..

  9. 4.0 Beikthano (1 review)
    - The Silence Speaks here...
    Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
    Beikthano image
Thanks to my car-driver that I visited Baikthano. I did not know about it because then it was not listed on Trip Advisor. And of course, in a typical Burmese P and B interchange, he was calling it Pyithano. I had been to Pyay and have read about Baikthano. In Yangon I had come across an Art Gallery named Baikthano. But frankly speaking, I had not given any thought to it. It is about 20 kilometeres from Taungdwingyi Township in Magway Region, from Pyay it took us about three hours to reach Baikthano, which is one of the ancient Pyu cities. As it was Sunday, the museum near the entry gate was closed. So, we had to explore without any guidance. The city was here about a 1000 years ago - to be more specific 200 BCE to 900 AD. Moreover, it was established by a Queen - Princess Pan Htwar . As most of the structures are destroyed, it is hard to imagine what was here. I could not help feeling a sense of loss - loss of the unknown. It also reminded me that cultures rise and fall ... mysteriously indeed. I was able to visit ruins of city wall, monastery ruins, memorial hall ruins, ruins of Stupa-like architecture and so on. The information boards there are bilingual - Burmese and English, it certainly helps. In May 2014, UNESCO has recognized it as 'World Heritage Site in South East Asia'. Obviously a poor country like Myanmar cannot spend money on historical sites when their primary need is to take care of its own people in present. Well, it is a large ruin. So, not much to 'see' if you are looking forward to something funny and exciting. But if you are a history and/or nature lover, there so much to see and so much to think about. May be the ruins have so much to tell, only if we can listen. The silence speaks here ... clear and loud! See more..

It was fun to see the oldest golf course in Myanmar. We never played the course but had a practice on the putting green and collected the course card. The course looks now like a bit of a run down course but it had been dry for a while in the area. See more..
