Kite surfers, paragliders and deep-sea fishermen flock to windswept La Morne, a small village on the southwest side of Mauritius. Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a dramatic basaltic rock peak dotted with caves that once harbored runaway slaves, presides over luxury resorts and a wide beach widely regarded as the best on the island. Throw in a shimmering turquoise lagoon and gorgeous sunsets and calling the town "paradise" doesn't seem like a cliché.

Incredible experience. We did the dolphin swimming excursion and although it was only a couple of hours, it was worth every penny. We had spectacular conditions, and got to swim with dolphins 3 times in our trip. They were only 15 mins from the beach! The boat was clean and larger than I’d anticipated. Swimming with the dolphins was actually quite hard work (lagoon current + swimming fast to keep up with them!) so I’d recommend this only for strong swimmers, although weaker or non-swimmers will still enjoy watching them from the boat, as they get so close. We also went further up the coast to a more secluded & sedate snorkelling spot, also incredible to see literally hundreds of fish surrounding you. Every time we visit Oli for kitesurfing, meanwhile for a decade, it’s a pleasure to see him again! We were very warmly welcomed by Oli and Katja. We felt slightly insecure after four years of a kitesurfing break and some uncertainty if we still could do it. Oli took his time and was very patient to explain the basics to us and to introduce the beach and water conditions. Then he helped us to launch and get into the water. After he realised we were able to kite upwind and all was fine, he went back to the beach. At the end of our session he helped us landing again. This was my second lot of kitesurfing lessons, so I was very much a beginner. I had six sessions with LMKS and by the end I was confident with the water start and enjoyed many decent runs on the water. The shallow lagoon where LMKS is based is perfect for kitesurfing, they provided all the equipment needed, including walkie talkies so I could have the instructor in my ear throughout. We were staying at Lux Le Morne and Mario would pick me up each time and drive me back afterwards. I felt looked after, safe and received such great tuition from the instructors - so grateful to Kuba, David and Lois for being so nice, helpful and professional. It really made my holiday in Mauritius extra special. If you want to learn to kitesurf or improve your skills, I would definitely check out LMKS. I booked this activity to do a surprise to my girlfriend but I was the one that got surprised as well. Perfect experience to never forget. We left Le morne with the sunrise with Navy’s brother, Kevin in a bit bigger boat, we found the dolphins after 15/20min and the experience was unbelievable, swimming very close to them, in very clear waters. Kevin and his helper guide were amazing, very kind and made the experience even better. Having heard my friend rave about Arnaud’s tours we booked a tour of the south-west of the island and we weren’t disappointed. Easily booked through WhatsApp, we were picked up in his large van which easily accommodated 7 of us. Very comfortable and water supplied. We were taken straight to the places we wanted to go and Arnaud made suggestions along the route as we didn’t have time to see everything in one day so we made adjustments to the plan whilst travelling. Had a great time at Hindu monuments, La Vanille Nature Park, lunch at a local restaurant, stunning views at Black River Gorge and Seven Coloured Earth with shorter stops at several beauty spots all interspersed with Arnaud imparting his knowledge about everything Mauritian. Despite the fact that we are not very sporty or fit, we learned very quickly thanks to good and explanatory semi-private lessons from Dodo and Jean Jack, while Patrice was keeping a good company on the beach. Hired a mountain bike for 4 days to tour the South-West corner of Mauritius, everything was perfect. The bike worked really well, had good brakes and good tyres. They delivered and picked up the bike from my resort in Le Morne, and were really really friendly. Also supplied a lock and helmet as you would expect from a reputable bike rental. As for a real newbie, as me, firstly the basics about kite setup, wind, water streams, safety features were explained. My instructor was always more than friendly and motivating. She gave steadily helpful tops for further improvement and for making learning kite surfing easy and fun. The location at Le Morne is beautiful and provides perfect conditions. We had booked a catamaran trip to Bentiers Island for Diwali and needed a place to rest afterwards instead of driving home and we’re were pleasantly surprised by our lovely little studio apartment. It was on the 3rd floor of Surf House and had a view of the Bentiers island and some of the neighbors Diwali lights. There was a fully equipped kitchen and fridge. Eric and Sebastien are two brilliant people keen to make your dolphin watching trip the experience of a lifetime. They leave earlier than most other trips and as a result we found ourselves as the first and only boat with the dolphins. We swam with spinner dolphins 6 times and on each occasion were expertly guided in the water by Eric. We also got to swim with Eagle Rays and Turtles. We know they also often meet bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales. Respecting the animals is key to this trip and we highly recommend you go with Philo (Eric and Sebastien). So much so we suggested the trip to two other couples at Lux* Le Morne who subsequently had exactly the same superb experience. We were at the St Regis hotel and booked a full day tour swimming with the dolphins and crystal rock with lunch on ile aux benitiers. Early morning drive got to see a rainbow and sunrise. Dolphins were immediately spotted from the boat and we took a dive to swim with them best experience ever. From there went to crystal rock beautiful rock with lovely coral all around. Truly amazing Went to benitiers for a BBQ and chill out for a while and got back to crystal rock for some snorkeling. We visited Mauritius the first week of October as the country reopened. Not all business were ready but, ScubaCaribe was in tip top shape. We went for a two dive outing with their dive master and a new hire Ben. Before I get into diving specifics I would like to recommend ScubaCaribe based on friendly staff, good facilities, and being <100m away from an amazing natural area for water sports. As novice divers, having 10 dives prior, good instruction was top priority. Ben delivered on that providing clear guidance, attention to detail, and genuine care for us and the wildlife. I liked that he didn't do everything for us but allowed us to use our training and setup things up under supervision. The boat picked us up right on the beach and took us to Hoi Sion wreck and aquarium dive sites, both full of life. We visited this World Heritage Monument at the foot of Le Morne mountain opposite the public beach. The monument capture the tragic moments from history of slave trade with central sculpture in a circle surrounded by other rock engravings and sculptures. It symbolises the importance of freedom in our lives and to promote peace.This is part of slave route of the Indian ocean and was inaugurated on 1st February 2009 marking the occasion of 174th anniversary of abolition of slavery in Mauritius. The tragic stories of how slaves jumped from the mountain cliff to escape capture surrounding this area bring tears to our eyes and move our hearts. Le Morne Brabant is a mountain in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Mauritius. It was the refuge of the maroon slaves between the 18th and 19th centuries, where they gathered in caves and at the top of Le Morne. This place, nicknamed the “Republic of the Maroons”, is today a symbol of the suffering of slaves and their struggle for freedom. The island was first populated by the Dutch in 1638, by a Dutch governor and about twenty families. At the end of the 17th century, 200 Dutch people lived on the island, with between 500 and 1,000 slaves from Madagascar, Africa, India, and Java.
