   Me and three friends spent three days with Karwan, travelling around northern KRI - leaving from Erbil and spending a night in Duhok and Korek Mountains, returning to Erbil. Karwan is hands-down one of the best tour guides I have had, if not the best. He is incredibly knowledgeable of both the older and more recent history of the area, was great at managing the route and itinerary and overall just delivered a great experience. He knows so many great (and some secret) spots, and seems to know people in all the places we'd stop. He has a great sense of humour, is super interesting and was a really easy person to get along with - we really enjoyed the continual chat, hearing his stories and experiences, and sharing jokes. The area is really beautiful and interesting but we wouldn't have been able to get a fraction of the value of the place without Karwan guiding us. 100% recommend him to anyone who wants to travel in the area!    Haval was the best driver and tour guide you can wish for. He told us passionate stories about the past and present of Iraqi Kurdistan, with a recount of his own experiences. He took us to places that were on our itinerary but always looked for an opportunity to show us something more like the memorable Sufi gathering in Sulaymaniyah. He showed us the beautiful and grim sides of living in Kurdistan. We visited Saddam's prison and went to see a beautiful sunset from a mountain top with local people enjoying the quiet evening. Haval was very attentive to our every need and whim like vegetarian food or an occasional bottle of whine. And he (and his brother Gavand) helped us a lot with difficulties of travelling in COVID-19 times like arranging PCR tests at a hospital. See more..

    During the rule of Mir Muhammad Pashai Gawra (1813-1837 A.D.), a factory was founded in Rawanduz city in Erbil to manufactore weapons and ammunitions under the supervision of Wasta Rajab. The latter who was sent to France to learn about this subject and later designed and supervised the manufacturing of cannons. He made 222 cannons in three different sizes of which the largest was accomplished in 1823 A.D. The cannon pictured below is 1.5 meters long. Some of Wasta Rajab's cannons are on exhibit at Baghdad museum. The cannon was named after its inventor, and is therefore called the "Wasta Rajab" cannon. See more..

    Eej Castle located on a high hill between Rawanduz and Soran area, is a fortification built by King Mohammed (Pasha) of Rawanduz in early 17th century. These colorful, elaborated kilims and rugs are the products of Kurdistan nomadic life style which will not survive in the 21st century. The beauty we perceive from these textile is intertwined with our nostalgic feeling towards their way of life - which had to be lost for many reasons. A visit to the second floor cafe and some panels there will give you more information about their culture and how / why these textiles were produced.     Had a fantastic experience. I notice some reviewers have had difficulties accessing the mosque. A small group of us visited on a Friday in the early afternoon approximately 14:00. The mosque was open we admired the beautiful interior. Shortly after we arrived the call the prayer started. We watched respectfully from the back and at the end of prayers people greeted us and shook our hands. Everyone was very welcoming. The next day I went on an organised tour.
