   Beyond the historic town of Amapala, as you head up the road from town, there are several beaches as you go around Isla El Tigre where Amapala is located. One of these, of course, is La Playa Grande (the big beach). From the beach you can look westward into the Gulf of Fonseca and see El Salvador off in the distance. As you are, of course, looking westward, this would be a great place to watch the sunset. Also along the beach are small restaurants and people with their fishing boats (so, you get to see a little of the local culture). See more..

   I visited this island over the Morazán holiday and it was a delight. It is a no frills place, with little else to do but visit the beach and hike the volcano. The views from the island are stunning and I would thoroughly recommend the volcano hike. Which takes around 3/4 hours. The historic town was the first capital of Honduras and has some very old colonial buildings. There is a museum when you first get off of the ferry but only the gift shop was open when we visited as the rest of the museum was being renovated. We stayed for a couple of nights and that felt like enough time. To get to the island there are public ferries which set off when full or you can pay extra if you don't want to wait.
