   I visited the island with a group of friends and stayed at the main hostel on the island. We parked our car on the mainland and took a short boat ride to the island. The boats run during the day and are very affordable. Once we arrived on the island we walked to the hostel (10-15 minutes) and immediately noticed the change of pace from the mainland. Waking up with the beach always in walking distance is amazing! The beaches are mostly quiet and the island is nearly surrounded with mangroves. If you ask around you'll find there are mangrove tours with a thriving bird life in the area. The island community is fairly small, peaceful, and safe. There are several pupuserias, a bakery, shops, and juice stands. We were able to find food for the vegetarians in the group and thoroughly enjoyed the food options. Several floating restaurants operate in the middle of the river, with at least one open year round. See more..
