I stumbled upon this place during a work trip to Sucre and found some really awesome and unique pieces! The pieces are reasonably priced and the father-son duo responsible for the art gallery seem like really awesome folks. Totally recommend if you're looking to take a small piece of Sucre back home with you! See more..
  4. 4.5 Plaza 25 de Mayo (575 reviews)
    - ¡Plaza de perfecto!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Plaza 25 de Mayo image
This great plaza is centrally located amidst the historical buildings that constitute a capital of this fantastic country! It is extremely popular and occasionally throngs with people, almost to the point that one has seek an alternate path through. It is an excellent point of reference for directions, especially since I was overnighting at the close by Colors House Hostel. The sculptures/architecture reflect the storied history of beautiful Bolivia, as well as being magnets for contemporary civic discourse. If it’s happening & important, it’s likely that it’s attached to this important public space. There is always snacks & drinks available here, from kiosks or the seemingly always-present TIAs selling from park benches. I was quite pleased with them as last night (09MAR) there was a showing of “el Diablo del Mineros”, and I provided popcorn for all viewers because I was able to Gimprush to the plaza and buy several bags! It certainly gets my enthusiastic “iWheel of Approval!” See more..

    - Worth the stop !
    Architectural Buildings
Church of San Felipe Neri (Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri) image
This might of been my favorite thing in Sucre. I was nervous about the “finding the door” thing but it wasn’t so hard. If you locate the BCP atm it is essentially across the street. Loved the view and we even saw some parrots on the roof drinking out of the gutter! It’s incredible to think that the tile is original and so old. You won’t need a ton of time here but make sure you come between 3-6 See more..
  8. 4.5 Museum of Indigenous Art ASUR (269 reviews)
    - Gorgeous collection carefully curated
    Speciality Museums • Art Museums
Museum of Indigenous Art ASUR image
This is a really special place, a gorgeous collection curated by an anthropologist with decades of experience working with Bolivian textile weavers. It’s carefully thought through. Reading the texts accompanying each textile, you notice that the weavings are becoming more complex over the course of the century, flourishing rather than dying out, due in no small part to the assistance this initiative gives to contemporary weavers in surrounding villages. This is the best place to buy weavings in sucre - it’s an ethical project. They are now reopen all day Monday to Saturday apart from lunchtimes, despite their website being down and info to the contrary on google search See more..
  9. 4.5 General Cemetery (188 reviews)
    - When in Sucre - Well Worth a Visit - Make Sure You Get a Guide
    Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Cemeteries
    General Cemetery image
The General Cemetery of Sucre is a beautiful place to visit and offers some good insight on the history of Sucre and Bolivia and Sucre's relationship to La Paz. The guide we had was great - definitely a bit biased and am not convinced most of what he said was fact but to me it was more interesting to hear his thoughts on things. The tour guide should be around Bs. 35 (even for a group). Bring water and sunscreen and enjoy! See more..

    San Francisco Church image
Ask someone about the tour! It was only by accident that we were sent to a back office to buy a photography permit and we did not realise that a guide came with the permit. The tour was excellent and even reached the roof to look at the cracked bells and of course rooftop views over Sucre. See more..

    - Beautiful!
    Canyons
    Icla Canyon image
Nothing I can say (or even pictures I can show) could ever do this beautiful place justice. It’s a two hour drive from Sucre, and is 100% worth the trip! There are several paths down to the bottom, with varying levels of difficulty. See more..
  16. 4.0 La Recoleta (538 reviews)
    - Beautiful old monastery with a view
    Religious Sites
    La Recoleta image
This place used to be the first centre of Sucre. It is situated on a hill, and is surrounded by narrow cobbled streets winding up from the present Sucre centre. From the terrace and the cloister the old monastry offers a beautiful sight of the valley of Sucre. Recently, a new restaurant and cafe has been opened, and the open air theatre below it is a delight to visit, especially when the music is playing. See more..

    - A Must When Visiting Sucre
    Parks
    Simon Bolivar Park image
This park is pretty and offers insight into Sucre, and Bolivia's, past. The highlight for me is the tower that was indeed designed by THE Gustave Eiffel! The park makes for great people watching too! Make sure to go in the evening as well as during the day. See more..

  21. 4.0 Museo de la Recoleta (77 reviews)
    - Very interesting monastery
    Speciality Museums
    Museo de la Recoleta image
Right in the heart of Recoleta, directly on the plaza, this museum is only BS15 to enter, but you will have to wait for a tour guide, who alas, only speaks Spanish. The tour takes in the surprisingly large grounds, the cloisters, the beautiful choir of the adjacent church and a very interesting museum. Sadly, photography is not allowed in the museum, which is the most photogenic part of the tour. The church can be seen from the choir, but the tour does not actually go inside the church otherwise. See more..

    - Peace and view
    Churches & Cathedrals

  23. 4.0 The 7 Cascadas (55 reviews)
    - A great hike starting by the dinosaurs, ending by a swim
    Waterfalls
    The 7 Cascadas image
This was a wonderfull hike from the dinosaur foot prints, down to the river and along the river all the way up to the waterfalls. Note that the upper waterfalls are more demanding to reach, but you can have a picnic and a swim by the lower waterfall. Everyone can reach that one. A nice and relaxing place. We made the hike together with the non-profit Condor Trekkers in Sucre. Of course you can go on your own, but going with Condor Trekkers means spending money for something good and having fun at the same time. See more..
  24. 4.0 Museo Charcas (University Museum Colonial & Anthropological) (36 reviews)
    - Wonderful Tour of Religious Art Collection
    Friday: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM - 6:30 PM Speciality Museums
Museo Charcas (University Museum Colonial & Anthropological) image
We had a wonderful guided tour of the religious art galleries on the second floor. The guide covered a lot of territory about painting and Christian iconography -- asking us a number of quiz questions along the way. Because the tour was guided, there were some artworks that we skipped over, and we didn't get to read any of the labels to see what information they might have contained. We went through the contemporary art galleries on the first floor at our own pace. There was not much explanation of the art here, although there were some excellent pieces on view. No photos allowed of the religious art collection, but there were several pieces that I found of sufficient interest that I bought the museum guide. See more..
  25. 4.0 Universidad de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (30 reviews)
    - Beautiful colonial building
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Universidad de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca image
While you visit Sucre, I definitely recommend you to enter inside the Universidad de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca, just a short walk from the main place "Plaza 25 de Mayo". The building is colonial style with white walls. The most beautiful part is the central courtyard surrounded by columns and the central fountain. Just a pleasure to walk around!!! See more..
  26. 4.0 San Lazaro Church (14 reviews)
    - Sucre's Oldest Church - Worth A Visit
Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    San Lazaro Church image
I found it hard to know when the church was open - I went at 6 pm during a weekday and it was closed but I think trying to go at Mass time is a good strategy. See more..
  27. 4.0 Fuente del Bicentenario (13 reviews)
    - AMAZING
    Spent < 1 hour Fountains
    Fuente del Bicentenario image
This was such an unexpected surprise! We heard about the light and music show but didn't expect much, if anything but it was amazing! From 7-9 pm, varied music with LED fountains. Lots of locals watching with us. What a Brilliant Evening!! See more..
  28. 4.0 Parque Simon Bolivar (12 reviews)
    - Pretty park with underwhelming Eifel Tower
    Parks
    Parque Simon Bolivar image
Parque Simon bolivar is a beautiful public park with an entire section for children to play. It also has an original Eifel tower designed by the man himself, however its only 8m high so it's a bit underwhelming. See more..
  29. 4.0 Casa de Hacienda Viña de San Pedro (1 review)
    - Hermosa Casa de Hacienda
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas

    - Interesting history of a 'European inspired' castle
    Castles
    La Glorieta Castle image
The background story to La Glorieta Castle, and seeing how it plays out by visiting the 'castle' is interesting. However, compared to castles you would see in Europe / the UK, this is far from par. The castle is near a military base, so don't be put off by soldiers walking around, etc. Tip 1 - if you want to take photos, you need to pay an additional fee Follow my #30somethinggapyear on Instagram @DatLoongJourney.
