  1. 5.0 Valle de los Condores (81 reviews)
    - Perfect getaway

    Valle de los Condores image
El Refugio Valle de Los Condores , is an amazing place only one hour from Tarija. It is the starting point for a trek in the mountains to go see condors. The hosts are wonderful, the food (veggie) is amazing and the hostel is cosy and confortable, with an amazing view on the Valle. We spent a few days there to go on the 2 days trek with local guides. After an amazing breakfast with local products (They have a few cow’s and a permaculture project), we climbed up the mountain to see many condores. At night, we camped in the mountains under the stars and the next day, we went for a swim in a beautiful waterfall before heading back to the Refugio to enjoy a fantastic meal. It is the perfect getaway place for hikers and everyone who want to enjoy the countryside! Do not hesitate to contact them to have more information and book your stay :) See more..

    Bodega Aranjuez 1976 image
Upon arrival to the Bodega we received a warm welcome from the staff and were given a few minutes to settle and enjoy our surroundings. We were given a tour of their facilities while being guided through their winemaking process. After a taste of refreshing Terruño white wine, we made our way by bus to ‘Finca el Origen’ where we were given a guided tour of their beautiful vineyards. Notably we stopped by ‘Lote 40’ where the first Tannat vines were planted in Bolivia. These are the vines producing the wines that are getting Bolivia international attention. Finally we were sat in an elegant building at the finca with gorgeous surroundings to enjoy a wine tasting with ham and cheese pairing. The knowledgable and friendly Gerardo, the head of tourism and export manager at Aranjuez, lead us through the process. We had chosen the ‘Experiencia Premium’ which meant, in addition to the first three wines, we tried the Bodega’s 4 most premium wines. A majority of these have won awards at international competitions; It was well worth the extra 75 Bolivianos. On the way back, the staff were then kind enough to drop us off right outside where we were staying in town. All in all, it was an amazing experience with kind, knowledgable staff and delicious wine. If you find yourself in Tarija craving good wine and good company, I couldn’t recommend it more. See more..

The old library they keep is a remarkable treasure with books from the colonial times, since Tarija is a small city with a peaceful life, it helped to keep the library intact since its foundation in 1606, other old libraries in bigger cities were destroyed during military coups, or social problems, or any natural disaster. But that is not the case for this one, definitely a place to pay a visit for history lovers. They also have some archeological vessels and tools from different cultures that had influence in the region. As a good bonus they have beautiful paintings from different schools of art like the Potosi and Cuzco style. The guided tour is only in the afternoons, every hour beginning at 15:10, 16:10, 17:10 and 18:10. The door is closed, you will need to ring the door bell. See more..
  13. 4.5 Chorros de Marquiri (6 reviews)
    - Stunning waterfall and a nice hike trail!!
    Hiking Trails
    Chorros de Marquiri image
It is a bit tricky to get there as most taxi drivers does not know really where it is and it is still quite a hidden place. After crossing the bridge you will reach a check point where you need to pay 10 Bolivianos to enter the area. After that the dirt road is getting worse and if the taxi won't take you the whole way it is about a 30 min walk to the start of the track, just follow the road towards the mountains. The start consist of a parking lot in front of some houses and a sign. Thereafter the track is easy to follow as the village people has made a remarkable job building fence along and marking the 40 min track to the waterfall. The path is beautiful and the waterfall is really impressing and definitely worth a visit when you are around Tarija. See more..

    Waterfalls
    Coimata image
The coimata waterfalls is a nice getaway from Tarija. It is aproximately 14 km from Tarija city center and if you want to enjoy the most of the nature I would recomend to go there with bike. You need to go along the car road but after Tomatitas the road is smaller and calmer and you can enjoy views of the country side and village life. The waterfalls it self is not too special but definitely worth a visit. There is a nice hotel near by, Pasarela, where you can sit at their terass enjoying an icecream with a beautiful view. Nice day trip! See more..

Nice place if you avoid peak times. I have been here a few times the food is good the wine ok, it is more about the typical atmosphere of this region. If you come before 12 pm you can pick your table, maybe not next to the speaker. And as everywhere in Bolivia, people like to drink until the bitter end. See more..

  26. 4.0 El Camino del Inca (2 reviews)
    - A pretty pain in the butt
    Hiking Trails
    El Camino del Inca image
We trekked this Inca trail from Sama back to Tarija just recently. It was the beginning of December and start of rainy season. The trail is pretty but poorly marked and there are very few options for accommodations or food along the route. We took the “Sama” bus from Parada al Norte at 9:00 am in Tarija (20 bolivianos) and got our at the park 2 hours later. We saw flamingos and many other birds around the lakes, which were very dry at that time of year. The path goes to the ridge line and then catches the Inca trail where it begins a long decline which is often steep and treacherously slippery. As soon as we cross the ridge, the clouds stayed with us for two days and rained constantly. We stayed in Cordillera at the only hostel along the trek, which was dingy and dirty and very uncomfortable. They have sheep organs hanging from the clothesline outside of our room. It was quite an experience. The next day, we did the remaining portion which was also difficult and slippery but passes nice terrain when there is actually a view. We ended at Pino Sur and caught a 10 boliviano trufi 45 minutes back to Tarija. Quite an adventure and not one we would repeat, but glad we have some interesting stories now. If you want to see details of our trek including distances, elevations, etc., or want to know more about sheep parts hanging on a clothesline in the rain, search for Career Break Adventures and Sama Bolivia or something similar. Enjoy your trip! See more..

    Lago San Jacinto image
Half an hour from Tarija there's the barrier lake San Jacinto, by Micro 2,5 B. Many restaurants offering mostly the same food and lots of fish, big portions, cheap. Sitting right next to the water. You should also take a brightly coloured boat for a short cruize on the sea, 3 B. per person, they provide life jackets, and will take you on a trip of about 10-15 minutes. Try a hot fresh maisena, they're really tasty! ;) See more..
