    - A piece of History...

    Lapu Lapu Statue image
Of all the places we were, this was one of the ones that touched us the most, for the sake of being Portuguese and having been the place where Ferdinand Magellan was killed. Unlike everything that surrounds this place, here everything is spacious and minimally organized and careful. Tributes are paid to Lapu Lapu (named as the first Philippine national hero), the Ferdinand Magellan, commander of the first fleet that circumnavigated the world and all the historical achievements accomplished by the Spaniards in this stoppage. This monument was reopened once again for tourism just lately. This is very historic site , which signifies the country converting to a predominantly Catholic religion in the next era. But visiting here doesn’t entail paying cash . And it is just more of a brief photo opportunity. Part of our itinerary. See more..

The monument is filled with Stone carvings that describe each events that took place from our rich past. You will be welcomed by a caretaker who is full of wits. You will enjoy hearing stories straight from him. My kids appreciated everything we listed to. No fees here needed to walk around. But you can also be generous to Tip the caretaker who is passionate about his story telling and not to discount his sincerity to make you understand how the past happened. See more..

    Monte Cueva Shrine image
MAASIN CITY— boasts of the most amazing shrine, the Monte Cueva Asuncion dela Virgen Shrine, or simply Monte Cueva, The shrine is called Monte Cueva (172 meters above sea level) because its chapel is inside the cave. Canonically established by the bishop of Maasin, it is officially called the Shrine of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus and the Our Lady of the Assumption, the city’s patroness. There are two long stairways on both sides. The right one with about 550 steps is the upward entrance “path,” while the other, with over 300 steps, leads downward to the exit. It was said that the previous owner of the land had a dream about the Lady of Assumption, who asked him to build a shrine. True enough, he built it and subsequently donated the property to the diocese. See more..

    - A place for meditation and prayer.

Our Lady of the Assumption image
The view is nice, overlooking Maasin port. The steps going to the top of the statue is estimated to be 250 plus I guess. There are also stations of the cross near the stairs. People would offer you candles going up, and sell them for 2 pesos, and tell you that candles sold up cost 5 pesos. But its worth it to buy at the top, so you can also help with the contruction/maintenance in the area and also help the sisters managing it. See more..

    Holy Family Hills image
The huge property has giant statues depicting major events in the Bible, mysteries of the Holy Rosary, etc. There is even a small church where special masses are held. We were informed that during Holy Week this place is packed with people doing Stations of the Cross and Visita Iglesia. For me though it was a perfect place to meditate and contemplate my life as a Christian, at the same do a mean workout! Going up and downhill is a good cardio routine. An imposing statue of the Holy Family commanded my attention once I got past the pretty landscaping and the picturesque church. This made me realize just how small I really am in the universal scheme of things... Minimal donation requested for the maintenance of the place. See more..
  7. 4.0 The Smallest Plaza (1 review)
    - A really small plaza in Guimaras
    Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
A plaza is defined as an open public place. This plaza is no more than 300 square meters but has a statue of the national hero, Jose Rizal. They say it used to be the holder of the Guinness record for smallest plaza in the world but it remains to be the smallest in the country. Good for some picture-taking while enjoying the island of Guimaras. See more..
