Fort Rotterdam, Sulawesi, Indonesia

3.5 (970 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Sulawesi Historic Sites

Part of Dutch Colonial History

Big fort from the Dutch colonial history, well restored. Pity that the explanations on panels are only in Indonesian language. Guides offer their services at the entrance, but be aware: the one we had spoke hardly any English and charged 100.000 rupees, far too much.

See the Dutch Colonial Past in Makassar
Fort Rotterdam certainly would have been a dominating present in the Dutch colonial control of Makassar. While there are some interesting exhibits in the museum (Fort) it really was not an exciting presentation. The air conditioning was not up to the task on a very humid and warm day and this in itself inhibited enjoying the experience. My wife has had both her knees replaced and struggles sometimes with sustained walking. The lack of a lift in the Fort caused her to pull herself up and down the stairs - there were no seats in the Fort building. Glad we see the Fort but enjoyed other Makassar sights much more.

    Remnant of Colonial Glory
Fort Rotterdam's history is impressive- get a local guide to accompany you otherwise you'll miss out on the nuances. Make sure to walk all around the walls to get full experience. Skip the museums inside. On weekends lots of people wanting to practice their English on teh tourists.
