  2. 5.0 Hawaiian Vanilla Company (1.448 reviews)
    - The BEST Tour on the Island!
    Friday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Gardens
    Hawaiian Vanilla Company image
Ian, the owner, provided a very informative and entertaining tour of his vanilla farm. There was a cart available for those who needed a lift from the gift shop/restaurant down to the grow houses, and umbrellas (we had downpours!). Any information you could possibly want about the unique orchid that produces vanilla beans can be had, either in the presentation or by asking questions. We thought the lunch was too pricey, but after arriving in Hawaii and seeing restaurant prices, we wish we'd added on the reasonably priced vanilla-inspired luncheon! The gift shop is well-stocked (and the items are NOT at the airport). This was the BEST activity and/or tour we did on Hawaii! Highly, highly rated. See more..

The gardens were really beautiful and were a great place for taking pictures. The bridges, trees, water and mountain views, sculptures and plants were all so gorgeous. Driving through was peaceful, but it was so inviting that we also got out and took a little walk. It was easy to park and free to enter. What a treasure to Hilo! See more..

    Limahuli Garden and Preserve image
If you love nature, you will appreciate this preserve. They provide a booklet that describes the items along the path. I especially appreciated learning about how they have preserved native plants from the interior of the island that are near extinction and impact of immigration to the island. A reservation is a must, as parking and access is limited. See more..
