An amazing tropical experience

The Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden is a 501(c)(3) Scientific and Educational non-profit, whose mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations.

Highlight of our time on the Big Island
Our visit to the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden was absolutely magical and beautiful! The gardens are breathtaking and so exciting to explore. I would definitely recommend allotting around 3 hours for a visit in order to take full advantage of the gardens and to take your time wandering. We also brought a picnic lunch along with us which I HIGHLY recommend doing. There are several benches and picnic tables located throughout the garden with views better than any restaurant you could find. Ask the attendant for recommendations for your party when purchasing tickets (probably best for parties of 4 or less). It was our favorite meal of the whole trip just because of how peaceful and beautiful our environment was! Definitely include HTBG in your itinerary.

You Won't Want To Miss This!
We visited the Big Island of Hawaii this January (2023) and this was one of our most favorite things we did on the island! This tropical bioreserve is just a little north of Hilo and was stunningly beautiful, especially the views of the ocean. I can't recommend it enough. However, though I would not consider this a hike, just know that this walk was a little strenuous at the beginning and end as there were steep descents/climbs into and out of the bioreserve. Also, FYI, a public trail (The Donkey Trailhead) cuts right through this bioreserve. We actually stumbled upon this bioreserve because we were initially walking on the Donkey Trailhead. You will run into a staff member manning the gates to check if you have wristbands because if not, they don't want you sneaking into the bioreserve (understandable). We did not have wristbands but wanted to purchase some so we could walk through the bioreserve. However, we could not purchase any through the staff member manning the gates but instead either had to hike back to our car and drive to the front of the visitor center or continue hiking the Donkey Trailhead which eventually looped around to the visitor center. We chose to continue hiking to the visitor center where we eventually bought our wristbands. However, when we were done walking through the bioreserve, we tried hiking back to our car the same way we came in the first time. The guy manning the gates at the time didn't like this so much, and we're not sure why, but we were not going to hike all the way back to the visitor center to then walk along the narrow highway to our car that was parked at the beginning of the Donkey Trailhead. It would have been nice if we could have just purchased some wrist bands from the staff member manning the gates.
