The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde, Flanders, Belgium
4.5 (3.898 reviews) Monday: 6:30 AM - 6:30 PM Spent Ranking #10 in Flanders Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas
A pleasant detour rather than a destination
You're very unlikely to see a beguin walking around, and as other reviewers have said you might not get into the chapel either. The point of this isn't really to see the beguinage, it's more to walk through the park and confluence of canals and bridges around it. In Winter it's misty and atmospheric, in Summer it's warm, still lawns. We'd recommend doing this in early evening, just walk around it or sit for a while, watch the ducks and swans on the canal, and then go back around to Katelijnstraat and beyond for dinner.

An oasis of calm
It was astonishing to escape the hustle and bustle, and tourist horse drawn carriages by crossing a bridge over the canal and entering the gates of the Beguinage. Here is an oasis of calm in the midst of the city. Founded in 1245, the Beguinage was a home for devout women who created a religious community without actually taking holy orders. The central courtyard is striking with its tall windswept trees and flowers. The gates are locked in the evening, so any visits must be completed by 18.30. The small chapel was also open when we visited on a Saturday and had information leaflets in multiple languages.
