Never Gets Old

Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

    Moving
When you visit the memorial it is overwhelming to see all the names inscribed on the walls. You have to get there early for the last post ceremony as it gets very busy but it is well worth it. I have seen the ceremony on YouTube but when you are there and you hear the cornets resonating off the walls it is incredibly moving.

    Poignant...
Been to last post ceremony several times and always amazed at how many people turn up. It takes place every evening rain or shine and lasts up to 30 minutes. Always a dignified turnout and well worth a visit. The gate itself is a reminder of those who died in the great war.
