Cathedral of Our Lady, Flanders, Belgium

Well worth the time!

The imposing cathedral is under some external renovation but is well worth the visit because of its vast treasures and rich history. There is an entrance fee into the church, a shop and a small cafe, part of the commercialisation to help maintain the place. This late Gothic style of architecture has the tallest 123-metre tower, which dominates the skyline. The Ruben paintings add to the site's mystique, with its crypt, two impressive organs and numerous chapels and carvings with biblical themes, some having been brought from other parts of the country. It is a functioning church with services advertised within the building.

Beautiful both inside and out - you can spend a lot of time here
The Cathedral of Our Lady is also known as the Cathedral of Antwerp. It dominates the Grote Markt area. We got to it after traversing the Vlaeykensgang which is one of the only medieval streets left in Antwerp. It surely is an impressive Gothic Cathedral that began construction in 1352 and the first stage of construction ended in 1521. There is a modest admission fee of 6 Euros – to support the church and its huge maintenance budget. Most people pay the fee in order to see the four Rubens paintings which are considered masterpieces. We were fascinated by the Rubens but also by the many statues and other artwork. The wooden choir stalls were hand carved centuries ago. I can't imagine what it must cost to maintain the building and the art. You could spend hours here but we only had an hour and it was well worth it.
