Iconic medieval bell tower... don't shy away from the climb!

The most important of Bruges' towers stands 83 metres tall. It houses, amongst other things, a carillon with 47 melodious bells. In the reception area, waiting visitors can discover all kinds of interesting information about the history and working of this unique world-heritage protected belfry. Those who take on the challenge of climbing the tower can pause for a breather on the way up in the old treasury, where the city's charters, seal and public funds were kept during the Middle Ages, and also at the level of the impressive clock or in the carillonneur's chamber. Finally, after a tiring 366 steps, your efforts will be rewarded with a breath-taking and unforgettable panoramic view of Bruges and her surroundings.

Iconic medieval bell tower... don't shy away from the climb!
The most striking feature of the main square in Bruges, the bell tower soars 83 meters above the square. Some people are scared off by the 366 steps to the top, but the climb is not really that difficult and visitors are treated to fantastic views from the top. Along the climb, people can see the inner workings of the ancient clock and fabulous bells of various sizes. I strongly urge everyone who can to make the climb. The charge for the climb to the top is included in the Musea Brugge Card (which is a great deal for anyone staying in Bruges for more than one day).

    Super visit
Headed up the 366 steps on a busy Saturday at the end of November. We headed there earlier in the day and in the reception there is a machine where you can book a slot which is worth doing as given 20 minutes slot to head to reception. We headed up and thankfully there are a few places to stop off along the way up. Steps are mostly stone and narrow but the helpful rope handrail helps along the way,. The machinery of the bells is worth seeing, especially if it's just before the hour as you can see then the melody playing, although you can't hear it properly. If you want to hear, then it's worth being at the very top where the bells are all housed - that's quite a sight! The view from the top is great and good to see the buildings of the city from above. Very much worth the journey up.
