Beautiful temple south of Chiang Rai city. Beautifully decorated and surrounded by lots of visual art. Worth paying a ticket to go in to see the cool modern paintings which you rarely see in a Buddhist temple. Must visit. See more..

Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) image
Wow, amazing, very quiet after visiting the White Temple which was nice. The blue, gold and other colours were amazing. We both like blue so enjoyed the colours. It was well done with some new additions going up now so you could see some of the different stages in the building and painting process, very interesting. Inside and out was nice. Some nice little stands on the side, I had some a nice ice cream cone and my wife had a cup of nice sweet strawberries. Great place to visit! See more..

    Wat Huay Pla Kang image
Good place to come and watch the sunset, sat on the platform behind the giant goddess statue for this which gave great views over the mountains. You can go up inside the statue to the top in an elevator however this was closed when we visited. After the sunsets then the temple is lit up and looks very beautiful. Worth a stop. See more..
  5. 4.5 Wat Phrathat Doi Tong (156 reviews)
    - More than just a Temple
    Religious Sites
    Wat Phrathat Doi Tong image
While the Phrathat Temple was interesting, Doi Tung mountain has much more to offer, including an excellent botanic garden, a Royal Villa for Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother, an arboretum, and villages of at least three hill tribes (Shan Akha, Lahu). Once virtually denuded, this mountain is now green and scenic. And at the bottom of the mountain are some of the most outstanding limestone caves in Thailand, notably Tham Tung (Thailand's fifth longest cave), which is easily followed for about 800 meters, with scentic stalagtites and -mites. Little visited, but worth better dvelopment by the tourism agencies and the Department of National Parks. See more..
  6. 4.0 Wat Phra That Chedi Luang (117 reviews)
    - Best In Chiang Saen
    Religious Sites
Wat Phra That Chedi Luang image
We reached this temple on a taxi tour to the golden triangle and the old temples in Chiang Saen. There are a number of ruins nearby, but this appeared to be the best maintained. Wat Chedi Luang was once, Chiang Saen’s main temple. There is a large chedi and the ruins of a wiharn nearby. There appears to be some renovation going on here, with a new roof visible and a new Buddha image installed, although the sides of the hall are still open. There are a number of tall trees here giving shade to the area. Chiang Saen National Museum, Wat Phra Buat, Wat Mung Muang and Wat Maha That, are all within walking distance of Wat Chedi Luang. We visited all this ruins but the museum was closed for renovation. It took us about 1 hour to walk around and capture some pictures of this area. See more..
  7. 4.0 Wat Santikhiri Temple (69 reviews)
    - Out of this world

    Wat Santikhiri Temple image
We rented motorbikes in Chiang Rai and made the journey up here. We accidently overshot the turnoff for Mae Salong by almost an hour and ended up in Thaton. We're glad we did because Wat Thaton was one of the most amazing, beautiful temples I've seen in Thailand (300+). Anyways, we circled around and finally made it up to Mae Salong and we weren't disappointed. The road was fine, but a bit steep. Most beginners could do this ride comfortably. Once there, we stayed at Akha Guesthouse. This location was great because it was right in front of a morning market where local hilltribe people gather to sell food and other goods. Don't miss the old tea park outside of town with the enormous oversized tea cups. 2 days is probably enough time to see what you need to see here, but the best part is just relaxing and taking in the views and atmosphere. If you listen, you'll hear more Chinese than Thai here. See more..

    Wat Pa Sak image
This was a quick stop at the end of our 1 day guided tour around Chiang Rai. The wat was quiet and rustic - seemingly untainted from modernity and commercialisation, unlike many other wats. It was stunning during sunset. See more..

  10. 4.0 Wat Phra Kaew (38 reviews)
    - A Nice Find While Wondering
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
    Wat Phra Kaew image
Well I thought we were wondering but my wife had a plan. To find Wat Phra Kaew Chaing Khong. For Buddhists its very special as it is closely connected to the other two more famous ones In Bangkok and Chaing Rai. Its nice as we could walk along the river till the steps and street up to the temple. Its was very quiet, also cold as it was winter in Thailand and a cold snap came in. For us 12 degrees is cold. The monks keep it clean and well kept up, the Boat and surrounding small halls are nice. It not big at all and can be toured and photographed in an hour. See more..
  11. 4.5 Wat Sang Kaew Phothiyan (31 reviews)
    - Something different
    Religious Sites
    Wat Sang Kaew Phothiyan image
We came here on the way to other temples and wasn’t disappointed. The place mixes some modern themes with traditional. (See photos) There are places to eat outside the temple which was cheap and good food, there is somewhere to eat and drink in the temple too. The temple itself was spectacular and the statues and bells made it enjoyable to visit too. See more..
  12. 3.5 Wat Phra Buat (15 reviews)

    Wat Phra Buat image
Nicely located on the Mekong Chieng Saen, you can see Chinese boats tied up, visit a range of interesting old walls/stupas/wats similar to Chieng Mai but without the crowds, wander down the wide streets and just "chill out". The famous Golden Triangle is a short car trip up the road where you can view China, Laos and Myanmar at the river junction . See more..

    Wat Pra That Pukhao image
We reached this temple on a taxi tour to the golden triangle and the old temples in Chiang Saen. This temple is situated on a hill on the riverside at the golden triangle. Entrance here was free. The opening hours were stated as 8am-4:30pm. There is a restored Viharn and crumbled Chedis here. There is a Buddha sited on a platform under some trees. There is a road leading up the small hill, to the temple. There is also a staircase guarded by nagas to go up to this site. The view of the golden triangle from here is impressive. See more..
  14. 3.5 Wat Chetawan (10 reviews)
    - Not the usual Thai temple
    Religious Sites
    Wat Chetawan image
This is a semi-derelict temple and is therefore a bit different from the usual temples we visited. We were almost 'templed out' but went anyway. It was worth a stop, particularly if you are in the area, but you don't need much time there. See more..

  17. 4.0 Wat Phra That Mae Chedi (2 reviews)
    - Friendly and fascinating
    Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
Wat Phra That Mae Chedi image
Where to begin with this unique monastery? First it is 120 years old and run by a friendly, accessible and energetic young abbot. The most striking aspect of the monastery is the large sculptures of skeletons and grasping hands emerging from the ground. There is a splendidly disorganised collection of weapons donated by the faithful. These include a massive cannon, antique spears, swords and daggers as well as some dangerous looking maces. A number of more traditional items are there too, including some ancient Buddhas, safely kept in a steel cage. There is a lot of building going on too with an ordination hall with a royal barge on its roof, an enormous gong, and a handsome four faced Hindu god. A further oddity are large coloured stucco models of an ear, an eye, a nose and a tongue. The abbot will also establish a horoscope for you. See more..

    Wat Hiranyawat image
Located in Tambon Ko Chang of Amphoe Mae Sai, this is the home of Phra Sing San Chana Man, the biggest bamboo woven Buddha of Thailand. You will hardy find any western tourists here. But since I'm such a nice guy, I will reveal its location to the TA community by writing this review ;-) This is one of the most beautiful temples I've been to in Thailand. A true hidden gem. The temple complex is made of various large elephants, one very big on with the Buddha sitting on it. The details on it are amazing. The temple itself is made entirely out of bamboo wood too. Entrance to the temple is free. See more..

  23. 4.0 Wat Phra That Doi Wao (1 review)
    - Opulent Temple
    Spent 2-3 hours Religious Sites
Wat Phra That Doi Wao image
The temple was undergoing renovation works but its opulence showed. Large amount of artwork work being used to the extent of having a top end nightclub style toilet. It has a good viewing deck looking across into Tachilek. There were lots of neon lights and likely to be the casinos built. As the border was closed, the opposite bank is pretty lame. You will see the Chinese construction dotted along the Mekong of similar scale. The temple ground is good to visit from 4pm onwards if you are interested in getting into the prayer halls The external structures are good to kill a number of frames in your camera. Thereafter enjoy the night view See more..
