Wat Phrathat Doi Tong, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand

4.5 (156 reviews) Spent Ranking #19 in Chiang Rai Religious Sites

More than just a Temple

While the Phrathat Temple was interesting, Doi Tung mountain has much more to offer, including an excellent botanic garden, a Royal Villa for Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother, an arboretum, and villages of at least three hill tribes (Shan Akha, Lahu). Once virtually denuded, this mountain is now green and scenic. And at the bottom of the mountain are some of the most outstanding limestone caves in Thailand, notably Tham Tung (Thailand's fifth longest cave), which is easily followed for about 800 meters, with scentic stalagtites and -mites. Little visited, but worth better dvelopment by the tourism agencies and the Department of National Parks.

    A great escape into nature
This pagoda is on a hill called "Doi Tung" which is a historical area. The pagoda was believed built almost 2000 years ago just after the death of the Lord Bhudda.

Like life sometimes the journey is better than the destination
The road to Doi Tung is great once you get off the fast road. Passing many nurseries as you climb up the hill to the base temple location. At this point you have a choice to walk 1km or take a motorcycle as the road has fallen away and they are still repairing it. My advice, walk, it is not a hard walk and if you don't you will miss the climbing of the steps and the clanging of the bells as you approach the temple at the top. Once thre there re a few things to look at but nothing to rave about. But that's okay because getting there was great and going back just as fun.
