Aside from being a much used and active facility, HKPL is the oldest chartered library in Alabama in continuous service, founded in part by Helen Keller's mother. One room is dedicated to the Late Senator Howell Heflin an includes historic documents related to his service. Another room is dedicated to local history. A beautiful large portrait of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan by award winning portrait artist Martha Carpenter may be viewed in a large meeting room in the library. This is worth a visit while in Tuscumbia. See more..
  4. 5.0 Colbert County Visitor Center (1 review)
    - Friendly workers, great local information
Saturday: Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers
We needed local information during our visit in order to maximize our three days. This area is called quad-cities because Tuscumbia, Florence, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals are all connected. The local tourist center seemed to be a good starting point. It is located next door to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Great place to visit after gathering your information. The woman working went above and beyond. She gathered pamphlets, recommended restaurants to go to and those to avoid. She even stopped in the middle of her info, called us to the window to see the wild bunny living under the shrubs. After giving us a wealth of information, I told her if she saw us in the parking lot, we were getting drinks and crackers out of our cooler. She suggested we go around back to their picnic table, gave me two bottles of water, two diet Cokes, and a pack of cookies. We left armed with information that served us well during the remainder of our visit and with a warm welcome to start our visit. See more..

    Helen Keller Birthplace image
Because of the play and movie “The Miracle Worker” most people know the story of Helen Keller. What a treat it was for me to visit Ivy Green, the birthplace of one of history’s most inspiring stories! The staff is wonderful. They offer a personalized tour of the downstairs (no extra charge) or you can walk through the house yourself. The house is furnished with 85% original items (including what the guide called a “fainting couch,” a place for ladies to collapse from the hot Alabama summer days). Keller’s story is so widely known that there wasn’t much for the guides to add; however, they do know their history well. They’re also familiar with anecdotal facts (such as the story behind the creation of Braille). The stop was well worth my time, and I would be more than happy to visit again. See more..
  7. 4.5 Alabama Music Hall of Fame (153 reviews)
    - Fun and lost of information

Alabama Music Hall of Fame image
Honoring all styles of music and dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Alabama's musicians and the state's great musical heritage. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame was a dream and goal of the Muscle Shoals Music Association, a Shoals area based professional organization of recording studio owners, producers, musicians, songwriters and other music professionals. In 1980, through their efforts, the State legislature, with leadership of State Senator Bobby Denton, created a state agency, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Board, with a mandate to honor all of this state's great music achievers, and to build a facility in which to showcase these talented individuals and their accomplishments. We went on a Sunday around 11:30, and there was no wait. You’re not going here for the food, but I had the bbq nachos, and my friend had the bbq sandwich. They were both good and were the only food items our server could actually recommend. There was live music, which was pleasant but nothing to write home about. It’s a unique experience, and we were glad we went, but neither of us feels we need to return. See more..

There is always a friendly person to greet shoppers who want to peruse the eclectic collection of arts, crafts, antiques, foods etc. that range in style from the unusual like whimsical pelican umbrellas to the typical Alabama Christian gifts. The store looks and smells nice, and is a great way for visitors to get a feel for the area. No public restroom, however. See more..
