    Adventure
Having taught the novel, "Where the Red Fern Grows", for years, I had to visit the coon dog cemetery. Though it's pretty much off-the-grid, our GPS got us there, but we were there ahead of the final stop. There is a beautifully handprinted sign at its entrance. It took us about 20 minutes of checking out the headstones which varied from totally homemade to the professional tombstones. So many had touching testimonies to their loyal hunting companion and had even left their collar on the headstone. Bring pocket change in pennies to honor particularly touching ones, or all of them! A beautiful fall drive with the changing leaves, beware that GPS took us back to the highway via a dirt road, if I had to do it again, I'd go back the way I came in.

    Dog Lovers' Paradise! A GEM!
If you are in the Florence/Muscle Shoals/Tuscumbia area, this unique spot is worth your time. About a half hour drive from Tuscumbia, way out in the rolling hill country. Set your GPS for the Coon Dog Cemetery and trust its directions. Quiet, peaceful cemetery for many beloved coon dogs. Some graves have fancy headstones, others are simply outlined with rocks or have a dog collar hung on a homemade cross. Allow plenty of time to walk around and read the dogs' names and epitaphs. So much love here! There is a picnic shelter and a visitors' log. An unexpected delight.
