   I was looking for something typically dutch to send to my friends in South Africa and was advised to go here. How come you're not on Tripadvisor yet, I asked and the owner said she opened shop only 2 months ago. What a gem, this shop! Whether you want to buy dutch wine, dutch beers (!! over 120 kinds !!), dutch jenever or gin, or even a dutch whisky....she can't offer you just one, no; there's lots of typical dutch to chose from! Not just dutch though; Tulpglas is a world of drinks at itself with products you don't find elsewhere. Great atmosphere (dutch living room from the fifties) nice warm colors, good music on, a lot of drinks can be tasted, nice shop owner (how many languages does she speak? I heard her talk to english folks, some french businessmen and i'm pretty sure she welcomed some polish people in their own language). Oh and did I mention the 120 kinds of dutch beer??!!     The location of this place is at the harbour of Vlaardingen. The name "Kroepoek Fabriek" ( Kroepoek is Chip Srimph) was used to be a chip shrimp factory. It is now a very good concert hall, even the best in such small category. We visited this place for the concert of our favourite band from Nashville.     Together with old city park 't Hof this is a very pleasant green space in Vlaardingen. In October leaves on many of the trees turn orange, while the grass is still green and the ponds are filled to the rim with water. It results in beautiful color effects. When I visited on a rainy weekday the café at the Watertower was closed and there were few people around. From Rotterdam's beautiful central station tram 24 runs to Vlaardingen and stops at the 'market square' of 'De Loper'. This shopping center was completed in 1990. With its 85 richly varied shops well worth a visit, especially on Thursday mornings, when the weekly lively market is there.     't Hof (the Garden) is a four centuries old park, originally part of an estate where in the 17th century the Van Ruitenburgh family lived; you can spot a Van Ruitenburgh on the famous Rembrandt painting "De Nachtwacht". Today 't Hof is an impressive city park, together with the "Oranjepark", which was an addition in the '30's of last century. The park is close to the city center, at the other side of the harbour. It is a jewel in the cityscape of Vlaardingen, however, the council of Vlaardingen is desperate to find places to build more and more houses; some years ago a sway of new houses encroached on the "Oranjepark", so I wonder how long further encroachement on this green oasis can be put off.     Vlaardingen is an ambiguous city. Well known for centuries by the fishing trade, the city transformed to an industrial city after WW II, in the '50s and '60's of last century. During that transformation, a large part of the historic city center was torn down, to be replaced by what was thought in that time by cutting edge city planning. But in 2018 the city center of Vlaardingen seems rather tired and past the expiry date. Luckily the area round the Markt Square, where the Protestant Church of Vlaardingen is situated, with the characteristic church tower, was spared. This area, around the church tower, consists of historic buildings, including the historic City Hall, and buildings of more recent construction, but carefully designed to match the historic buildings on the Markt Square.     I've been here with friends on a cold, rainy afternoon. The guy working here was friendly and explained everything in a funny manner. The paintball field was nice with lots of places to hide including an old car and I think also a helicopter. Due to the rain it was a bit messy but I imagine that this would be great in the summer. Safety was good and we had a fun afternoon. Afterwards we ate there some spareribs with fries. Overall, a nice place to go and play paintball in the summer! See more..

    It used to be such a nice place with lots of shade and shelter against the wind provided by tall trees and shrubs. After the rearrangement by 'Staatsbosbeheer' now it is nearly all bare grassy land. The new trees that were planted died, because of drought and bad watermanagement. Whenever authorities in an office decide to cut old trees and remove shrubs, they do not seem to realize it takes decades for new trees to grow and nature to recover. New seedlings have to be nurtured, but they seem to have no budgetline for that. The park has a dead end towards the west, where the Blankenburgtunnel project is underway. Further west Maassluis has converted the old green zone into an industrial area (old trees were cut and the cycle path was dismantled). See more..
