   Our visit of the cheesemaking operation in Streefkerk was more than a tour. It was a truly charming experience from beginning to end. Our guide was proud (yet oh so humble!) of the family tradition she was honored to both inherit and carry on in her own daily work, alongside fellow co-workers equally devoted to excellence; but also to the enjoyment of what they do. They all seemed happy to be doing what they do! So often such a tour is just a placeholder or placebo to kill a little time before the primary purpose of the tour: the retail shop. This was the opposite. We actually learned how Gouda cheese is made by those who are busy making it. The "tasting" at the end of the tour was, of course, wonderful.    "In Liefde draaiend" is the original name of the mill. Special is not just the name, but also the location high on the Lekdijk with access to the river to enable the farmers to deliver their grain by boat from far away. "Love" was built in 1893 relatively late and perhaps explaining its robust advanced construction. Since 1970 the mill is not longer operational.    Built in 1581 this (seesaw) mill is one of the older windmills in the Alblasserwaard. Its surroundings are beautiful, as urban "development" or "recreational" commerce has not reached this part of the polder (yet). Nearby is a silence area and black-tailed godwits (grutto) breed in the meadows close to it. One of my favourite spots in the Alblasserwaard (better than Kinderdijk!). Easy to reach by bicycle from Rotterdam, Alblasserdam or Krimpen aan de Lek. See more..
