  3. 4.0 Zilvermuseum (84 reviews)
    - Fantastic museum dedicated to silver
Monday: Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Zilvermuseum image
It's a great medium size museum - probably would take you about an hour. The first floor has working silver smiths you can watch and interact with (and buy their products), the second floor is their permanent collection and top floor is exhibits. Everything is well laid out and presented. It's in the center of a small dutch town that has plenty of interesting shops and restaurants to keep you busy with, and within a 30 minute drive there are loads of other off the beaten path places to easily make a great day trip. 4. 4.0 De Veerpoort (35 reviews)
    - A nice city gate, the only one that is still there..
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    De Veerpoort image
The City gate is the only one of five city gates that survived... the first gate that was there was built in 1396 and broken down in 1590. The current gate was built in 1601 and once you go through here you come to the river lek, where you can have a nice view on the river and the ferry that brings you closer to the town nieuwpoort. There is a house on top, but I haven't checked if you can enter it... It looks nice and should be seen when you are in schoonhoven. See more..
  5. 4.0 De Watertoren (17 reviews)
    - The most beautiful water tower I have ever seen in my life!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    De Watertoren image
What were they thinking when they built this? I assume it was something like "we have too much money and have no idea what to do with it". Anyway. What they ended up with was a water tower that looks like it belongs to a fairytale castle. The biggest drawback of this tower that it is not open for the public to visit. But still a sight to behold. See more..
  6. 4.0 Grote Kerk Schoonhoven (3 reviews)
    - Historic with grave of Olivier van Noort
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Grote Kerk Schoonhoven image
Though in Gothic style the colossal structure looks a bit over the top. Perhaps the most remarkable part of the church is the 15th century tower. It survived due to extensive restoration work in tthe period 1927-1934. Concrete reinforcements were used to keep it standing. Olivier van Noort's grave is in the church. The great Dutch explorer died in Schoonhoven in 1627. See more..
  7. 3.5 Stadhuis van Schoonhoven (2 reviews)
    - Attractive historic building
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Stadhuis van Schoonhoven image
Of the original 15th century structure little is left due to radical renovations in later ages. Still an outstanding late gothic style building that helps to maintain the historic features of the harbor area. A tourist information center (VVV) is at the ground floor. For some reason paintings representing Willem III (stadtholder king) and Maurits of Orange are present in the council chambers. Both have a notoriously anti-Republican reputation. Willem III instigated the lynching of Johan and Cornelius de Witt. Maurits set up the trial and execution of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. See more..
  8. 3.5 Veerdienst Schoonhoven (2 reviews)
    - Modern ferry at historic location
    Ferries
    Veerdienst Schoonhoven image
Ever since the early 1400s a ferry service functioned at this location connecting the Krimpener and Alblasserwaard. A historic place indeed, though the ferry boats now are modern, efficient and frequent (every 10 minutes on weekdays). Pedestrians, cyclists, but also heavy traffic like trucks can use the ferry. Price indication: € 0.85 (pedestrian with a bicycle); € 3.70 (car) Even in winter to cycle a loop from Rotterdam to Schoonhoven on the north bank of the Lek river using the ferry to go to Nieuwpoort on the south side and return to Rotterdam via Kinderdijk is a pleasant experience, if there is not too much wind.
