What an amazing building/service! I am impressed every time I visit - often with my grandson (resident of Schiedam) in tow, but still overawed with the architecture and transformation of the past building to a functioning local library. You need to visit, just to feel what it's like to have a living (planted) library. Visit for an idea of what libraries can be - intimate, colourful, accessible and connected. The Molen De Walvisch is one of the largest windmills in the world ad is open to visitors. During our visit, we were able to climb the four levels (the first two are stairways and the last two are ladders) to the top of the windmill and walk onto the deck and watch the windmill blades rotate. The experience was very worthwhile. The mill is a working facility and staff are able to provide very good information regarding the history and the operation of the facility. The eight Schiedam windmills are officially the highest classical windmills in the world. The eight mills are surrounding the inner city of Schiedam, and it is easy to walk from one to the other. A must-see for travellers visiting the Rotterdam, Delft and Den Haag area. The Windmill De Walvisch (which is both a museum and a shop) is where most tours start, either by foot or by boat, as there is a tour boat (called the whisper boat) embarking at the entrance of the museum and sails around the canal that surrounds all of Schiedam with a tour guide. The museum is operated by the Jenever Museum (Dutch gin museum) and is currently closed due to Corona. The shop in Walvich offers a wide range of traditional and healthy biological flour products made in windmill De Vrijheid. The Walvich shop is currently open from Wednesday to Saturday. See more..

A Roman Catholic churh built in the Protestant heartland of Holland in 1890. The architect Adrianus Bleijs was born in Hoorn, but educated in Antwerp and getting experience at Cuypers' firm in Roermond. The southern influence is visible in the design (see OLV church in Maastricht) as well as in the materials used. I understood even (some of) the construction workers came from Limburg. I liked the interior more than the outside especially because of the dim light (neoromanesque arches, stained glass windows) and the 'warm' materials used like marl. Huis te Riviere (also called Huis Mathenesse or Slot Mathenesse) is the oldest known rectangular castle in the county of Holland. The castle was built by Aleid van Holland in 1262 and stood in Schiedam (South Holland) Remnants of the keep, which was part of this castle, can be seen today in the center of Schiedam next to the Schiedam city office on the Broersvest. The ruins cannot be visited, but can be viewed from the public road. In addition to the ruins, a work of art with the image of Aleid van Holland was placed in 1997 ('Lady Aleida'). See more..
