   Often I asked myself the question: what are these huge concrete slabs along the Caland canal doing here? After some research and asking locals I got the answer: they serve as a wind shield and make it possible for large ships such as cruise boats and cargo vessels to pass through the canal. At this point the canal is rather narrow and very much exposed to strong (western) winds. The 'wall' effectively blocks 75% of the wind. Never seen a construction like this ever before.    Built in 1887 to grind grain harvested on the isle of Rozenburg, the mill looks a bit lonely in what is now an urban environment. It is hard to imagine that once the inhabitants of Rozenburg were farmers. Very good that care was taken to restore the old mill to its former glory. See more..

   This is a relatively new church dating from 1935 at a central location on the isle. An older reformed church was closer to Zwartewaal as in the beginning -mid 1640s- the reverend had to be rowed across every Sunday for the weekly service. A newer church consecrated in 1659 in Blankenburg dominated the island for centuries, but was demolished. Eventually in the 1950s and 60s the whole village of Blankenburg was leveled to make way for industrial 'development'. See more..
