   On our first visit to Amsterdam, we decided to dedicate a day to see the countryside and local birds. I booked an all day tour with Birding Netherlands. Menno was our guide. He picked us up in his car from our hotel early in the morning (the tour was tailored to our interests and convenience). He took us to Oostvardersplassen Nature preserve, - an easy 45 minute drive from Amsterdam. We saw and heard warblers, finches, thrushes, tits in the forest area. We saw seed eaters (buntings) in a different part of the park which had low shrubs. Here the birds were active even at mid-day. We then walked along some trails by small ponds, where we saw nesting grebes, storks and ducks, among other species. From a blind, we saw hundreds of red deer, wild horses, Freesian cattle, and dozens of water birds at the lake. It was an amazing sight. We then drove to Durgerdam later in the afternoon, in time to see hundreds of water birds fishing actively (ruff, curlew, whimbrel, godwits, spoonbills, etc). On our drive back, Menno kindly stopped at Zaanse Schans to show us a working windmill. It was a really good tour - we saw over 85 species. Menno is extremely knowledgeable about birds, their behavior and nesting habits. He brought along a spotting scope and an extra pair of binoculars. He can identify birds both by sound and sight, as well as when they are high overhead. Our camera battery ran out at one point, and he sent us his pictures to make up for what we missed. Very professional tour. I hope I can do another tour some time, perhaps on a layover at Schiphol, during spring or fall migration. See more..

   Again we had a perfect experience with Marina Rijnsburg. We rent every year a couple of times a boat at Marina. Good Service, Good Boat, Good cup of koffie before started and a great time on the water. Sailing route very nice and diverse and of course through the fantastic city of Leiden ! See more..
