Cheese farm the Ruyge Weyde is our fifth generation family company in Oudewater, where we make real Gouda Farmers Cheese since 1847. Nowadays there are about 17000 dairy farms in Holland, of which only about 100 make real farmers cheese from fresh ‘unpasteurised’ milk. From these are not much more than 10 dairy farms organic, including us! Come see the cows, taste the cheese, and buy in the shop. See more..

    Grote- of St.-Michaëlskerk Oudewater image
The grand tower was built around 1300, while the church was added significantly later in the 1400s. The (city) tower was part of the defense structure of Oudewater until 1870. For military reasons especially the lower part of the tower with passage looks very solid and robust. No wonder the tower survived the destruction after the siege of Oudewater by Spanish troops in 1575. City hall did not. Much of the population was brutally murdered during the events also known as the Oudewater Massacre (in Dutch: de Oudewaterse moord). Note the saddle shape of the roof of the tower which is more common in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe in the north of the Netherlands. The impressive Gothic style church still serves as the center of the protestant community in Oudewater. Services on Sundays at 9:30AM and 6:30PM See more..

    Stadhuis van Oudewater image
Built in 1588 after Spanish troops ruined the old city hall and killed most of Oudewater's population in 1575. The building in Dutch Renaissance style looks almost celebratory and is testament of the resilience of the Dutch in their war against Spain. Within 13 years after the massacre this new town hall emerged. See more..

We were walking through the busy market place in Oudewater when we stumbled upon the Witches' Weighhouse. After watching a short video on witch-finding and looking at the exhibits on the upper floor we began the serious process of determining whether either of us were witches. First we were verbally examined about our likes, dislikes, professions and attitudes, then put to the real test - to determine if our weights were below normal for mere human beings. Witches, of course, are weightless or light, enabling them to fly through the air. We mounted the ancient scales while the curator added weights to the other side. Amazingly, she had sufficient to prove beyond doubt that we hadn't made a pact with Old Nick, so she issued us with certificates to verify it. A fun and informative half-hour. See more..
