    - Historic church and lively center of village community
    Churches & Cathedrals
When approaching Nisse (in my case by bicycle from Flushing) you immediately notice the churchtower as it can be seen from far away. Built in the 1300s it once served as a lighthouse. The adjacent structures were later added in the 14 and 1500s. The "Heren van Borsele" financed not only the exterior, but also the bigger part of the art inside. Remarkable are the wooden sculptures of the twelve apostles way up the preacher section of the church. They survived the iconoclasts during the Reformation in the 1570s. Secco art on the church walls were covered with plaster, but now again made visible. Note Saint Christopher above the door leading to the graveyard. The church still serves the Dutch reformed community (one mass every three weeks), but at the same time is the lively social center of the village. Nisse has just 625 inhabitants. The social section of the church is called 'wandelkerk' (walk-in church). Villagers greet visitors with enthusiasm and proudly show you around. Great experience. See more..
