Things to do & places to visit in Nijmegen, Gelderland Province, The Netherlands
At over 2000 years old, Nijmegen has had a pretty full life. Its transition from Roman military camp to modern municipality has not been without growing pains, but today Nijmegen is thriving, largely because of its lively student population and its status as a hub for political activism. Try to visit during the internationally popular Nijmeegse Vierdaagse four-day walking festival and the epic Zomerfeesten summer party. They happen at the same time, because why not?

-You can climb up to the top.
Tuesday: 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Stevenskerk, inspiring meeting place for art, culture and contemplation. Construction of the church started halfway the 13th century. In 1273 the church was consecrated by Albert Magnus, the Bishop of Cologne. Of this Roman Gothic church the groundwork and the most Western bays of the ship remain. Extensive construction took place in the course of the 15th century, among others the choir and the chapels. In the 16th century work was done on the transept and small part of the ship. After about 1650 construction stopped, which left the church unfinished. The tower was fitted with a new clock floor in the 15th century. During the bombing on Nijmegen February 22nd 1944, a large part of the tower collapsed. The South-Western part of the church was heavily damaged. Also in the period during the Second World War where Nijmegen was on the front the church incurred a lot of damage. After the WWII the church was thoroughly renovated. See more..

In this museum you will learn about the rich history of Nijmegen in important heydays such as the Roman era and the time of Charlemagne. We got excellent views of all Nijmegen’s bridges as we travelled in from 's-Hertogenbosch, especially Waalbrug above the Waal, a branch of the Rhine. It’s located near many small beaches and the area appears to be a popular spot especially during good weather. Apparently the bridge is over six-hundred metres long and of course it played a part to operations during World War II. See more..

- 4.0 Rijksmonument Valkhofkapel of Sint-Nicolaaskapel (22 reviews)
-Splendid early Romanesque-Medieval architecture dating from the year 1030
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
The monumental Romanesque Valkhofkapel-St.Nicolaaskapel was build in the year 1030.The early Romanesque architecture was inspired by the architecture of the "Paltskapel Aachen" in Germany build by Charlemagne. I enjoyed the fact that the chapel-interior was open to admire;the visit was free of charge but a 2euro donation is appreciated for the upkeep of the monument. Nijmegen's central Valkhof Park offers the ruins of the apsis of the 12th century Romanesque Sint Maartenskapel as well. The rest of the former Valkhof castle was demolished in the 18th century. In 1795 it was decided to demolish the former Valkhof castle damaged by the French attack on Willem 5 of Oranje-Nassau who was hiding in the Valkhof castle. The site of Valkhof-kapel and castle has been inhabited since Roman times making it one of the older monuments of the Netherlands comparable to Roman settlements at Voorburg( Zuid Holland) and Maastricht( Limburg).
