   Going to a brewery and drink the beer where the company is proud of always is a special treat. I have seen a number of fine examples of this, but so far nothing beats the Middelburg city brewery with their Hosternokke beer. Not that the beer is more exclusive than in other places (just good beer!), but the atmosphere is really great. Not pretences, just enjoy yourselves in an intimate little bar.    I enjoyed the charming historical alley called "Kuiperspoort";The 17th century buildings are reached via a discreet gate located hidden behind the canal called Rouaanse Kaai. The wooden barrels needed to store water,beer and wine for the 17th-18th century trade-ships were made here. A Kuiper is the Dutch word for a maker of wooden barrels. In the 17th and 18th century,Middelburg trade companies(WIC,West Indische Compagnie) were an important investor in the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Surinam and Curacao as well as the spice trade (VOC) to the East Indies. This secluded alley maintains the historical architecture of that period,but obviously the living conditions are much improved making for a quiet residential area. See more..

    From 1890 to 1898 Emma was formally head of state of the Netherlands. Her husband king Willem III who was 41 years older than she was, died at the age of 73 when their daughter Wilhelmina was just 10 years old. German born Emma became regent. Emma as regent was quite popular among the Dutch elite. Unlike her husband nicknamed king Gorilla, she abided by the rules of constitutional democracy and limited interference in politics. Her statue in Middelburg -unveiled by her daughter Wilhelmina in 1937- shows a dignified, dutyful lady. The sculptor H.J.
