This place is a small bar where you're welcomed by Gerrie the owner and her lovely helpers. You can get all sorts of coffee and tea, a regular Heineken or a special beer and of course soft drinks. They serve little snacks, like soup or grilled cheese sandwich and the typical Dutch 'bitter balls'. Famous is the pub's meatball, made by the owner's husband. It's a nice place to stay for a couple of hours. If you're lucky there's live acoustic music, mostly happening in the evenings. 't Kroegje is a wonderful place to rest for a while when your feed get tired walking in the lovely old town of Kampen. See more..

The Stedelijk Museum Kampen is located in the old town hall of Kampen. It has a collection consisting of four main themes: law, religion, water and the House of Orange. A highlight in the museum is the Aldermen's Hall from 1545, where justice was administered until 1795. The Schepenzaal is still in its original state. There are five changing exhibitions every year, including contemporary art. In the Former Synagogue on the IJsselkade, in addition to the changing art exhibitions on the ground floor, there is a permanent memorial exhibition on the Jewish history of Kampen in the gallery of the exhibition space. The Golden wheels which turn the sluice gates are a new installation and the view across the bridge adjacent to the station is the best. An old merchant and trading town D.M. owing to its location by the river it still maintains its old charm with botters and fishing boats moored alongside. Over three hundred years old and still called 'Nieuwe Toren' (new tower) because in 1663 it replaced an old chapel. At the time it must have been quite an achievement for a middle-sized city of traders to commit resources to building such a (non-religious) Carillon tower. Perhaps it served to underscore the significance of Kampen in competition with cities like Amsterdam. A competition Kampen eventually lost due to the silting up of its principal waterways. Anyhow, Kampens heydays left us this beautiful tower with music to increase happiness. See more..

The original gate dates from 1465. Its location marked the new extended outer ring of the city at the time formed by an earthen wall. The fortification served a clear purpose: to protect the city against conquerors. The architecture was rather military, than esthetic. This changed during the early 1600s when the city walls and gates lost their defensive role. In 1617 the Cellebroedersgate was reconstructed and got its present Renaissance style appearance. Its new destiny had become to serve as (luxurious) residence of the wealthy city elite. Probably the reason why the structure survived and was not demolished. Interesting is that the gate eventually got its final name from a nearby Cellebroeders convent. Perhaps in tribute to the work of the brothers who buried the dead during the Plague that struck the city. Celle from 'Cella' meaning grave. See more..

For ages -since the early 1300s- this gate was considered the most significant entrance to the city. The first bridge from 1448 to link Kampen with the mainland was located at this spot and prior to that the ferry used to dock here. Farmers would transport their goods (corn) to the market (koornmarkt) behind the gate. The two robust towers were added later, when Kampen reinforced its defense structure. The architecture of the gatebuilding is functional and less exuberant than that of the two other historic gates that were renovated during the early 1600s. The Koornmarktgate kept its austere looks and for a considerable time period served as a prison. Note the amazing masonry! See more..

Probably this one is the most prominent of the three historic gates left in Kampen. Just imagine there once were 20 gates. Anyway, the Broederpoort from 1465 dates from the same period as the Cellebroedersgate a bit further away. Like the Cgate renovated early 17th century to reappear suitable as a residence for wealthy city dignitaries. Apart from the festive towers the middle part looks really fine. As most Renaissance style buildings in the Netherlands it exhales celebration, rather than austerity. The gatebuilding now serves as an exposition room and -appropiately- a wedding location. Fascinating and exceptional. The centre displays part of its 3,000 strong top-notch icon collection on a rotating basis, with a few dozen being exhibited at any given time with extremely good explanations. I had seen a number of Russian icons in collections such as those at the Grand Palais or the Louvre, as well as a few orthodox churches, and hadn't been able to grasp the codes of the Russian iconostasis... until now! The explanations were straightforward, rich and extremely interesting. It must be noted that the first floor was entirely translated in English but the ground floor wasn't. This proved no hindrance at all however as Google Translate's live translation feature proved very capable in assisting my understanding. As for the icons themselves, they were truly magnificent. Even simply what is displayed at one time is well beyond anything I had ever seen in its breadth and quality. See more..

ERF-1 is a farm where they produce organic dairy. A small herd with varied cows, which stand outside on the land during the summer. The land is not treated with chemical pesticides. In the farm shop you can buy raw milk, but also pasteurized milk, yogurt, different types of custard, hangop, buttermilk, butter, cottage cheese and recently also cheese. They also sell organic meat. The farm is run by the parents and two of their children. At the opening times you can view the farm and the animals (also fun for the children!). They are happy to tell about their work and are very willing to give information about organic work at the farm. It is all about the combination of healthy land, healthy animals, healthy products and a healthy lifestyle. The farm and the farm shop are open to visit on Friday afternoon, from 2 to 4 pm and on Saturday morning from 10 am to 12 noon. See more..

De voormalige synagoge van de stad Kampen in de Nederlandse provincie Overijssel staat aan de IJsselkade. De synagoge werd gebouwd in 1847 naar ontwerp van stadsarchitect Nicolaas Plomp. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting van Nederland in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden, vooral in 1942, bijna alle joodse inwoners van Kampen naar vernietigingskampen gevoerd. Na afloop van de oorlog werd het joodse leven in Kampen niet hervat. De joodse gemeente van Kampen ging officieel in 1947 op in die van Zwolle. In 1984 werd in de gevel een marmeren plaquette aangebracht, het Joods monument, met namen van slachtoffers. Sinds 1972 staat het pand op de Rijksmonumentenlijst. Sinds 1984 is het in gebruik als Gemeentelijke Expositieruimte, waarin ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de joodse geschiedenis van Kampen. See more..

Outside (buiten) the city walls a Christian church dedicated to Mary was built over a period of time starting in 1369. Eventually this church got into decay. It was reduced to a pile of stones (een hoop stenen) according to a Catholic priest in 1809. In this year Louis Napoleon (French ruler of Holland) granted the minority Catholics in Kampen persmission to rebuild a church at the site. They built the present day church in neogothic style. Not as big as the Protestant Bovenkerk, but large enough to show they could come close to parity. Unlike the Bovenkerk, this church is still a place of worship and a center of the Catholic community in Kampen. See more..
