-Simple and modest church
Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
The small Dutch reformed church in Goudswaard dates from 1721. It has a simple rectangular structure with a modest tower. In 2008 the church was thoroughly restored. Goudswaard is a little village of just over 2000 inhabitants in the Southwestern corner of the Hoeksewaard with a strong sense of community. Every Sunday there is a service at 10:00 which lasts about two and a half hours. The community welcomes visitors. See more..

-Before the farmers came
Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
Part of the natura 2000 structure, the flats are a unique area especially for bird lovers. A visit gives you an idea of how nature looked before the farmers started to cultivate the land. Rather swampy, crisscrossed by creeks and small streams, no tall trees, mainly reeds and shrubs. 'Natuurmonumenten' made the flats accessible to hikers without infringing too much on the environment. There is no paved road or path, just a trail. I visited after a period of prolonged rain and the trail proved rather muddy. There are two viewpoints: one is a hut, the other an elevation. From both you have magnificent views over the Haringvliet and the Spui delta. There are two routes for walkers. One is short (1.6 km) around a rectangular body of water, the other is 4.6 km and goes right through the flats. Wear good shoes. There is a small car park (no charges). I cycled from Rotterdam (34 km) and saw more birds in the polder than in the reserve. November is quiet. See more..

-17th Century industrial heritage
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Strategically located on the dike in a corner of Hoeksche Waard where corn once was the major crop. The old brick mill from 1694 is still functional, though ever since 1945 not longer on a professional basis. I wonder whether 17th century Dutch people had the same apprehension and reservations, as people nowadays have about the windmills recently built nearby. Of course grinding grain (harvested by the local farmers) is more directly beneficial than the production of energy. Moreover the new structures are huge. Open on Saturdays from 11AM to 5:30PM See more..
