   13th Century church with detached tower standing solidly on an elevation in flat surroundings. The church is of a simple Roman style design. It is basically one hall. The tower is nearby and linked to a small house, where the sexton used to live and at some point served as a school. The elevation or 'wierd' is man made and used to protect the locals against floods. Just imagine for more than 700 years these buildings on the wierd have been there, testament of a proud past during which the people of Groningen struggled to survive the high waters of a menacing sea.
